"service Engine" light on ALREADY

well ive been lurking on here for the past few weeks, and right as i was about to order my 135i I found a local dealer that had the EXACT 135i I was about to build

so as of today im the proud owner of a TiAg sport pack 135i (pix will b up tom.) This car is already testing my will power with the 1200 mile break-in period, b/c im on mile 105 and i live less than 1 mile from work. But anywho,....as im driving home, my service engine came on. So i will be calling my dealer in the morning, but i was just wondering if anyone had this problem, and could possibly offer me any solutions

I'd check the gas cap just to be sure it's tight, but other than that there are dozens of things that can cause it.

Let us know how it turns out.

+1 on the gas cap. Most likely that's the prob.

Just take her back to the dealer and see what's up. Congrats on the new ride.

I'm not sure about our cars, but a lot of the newer vehicles have a specific warning for the gas cap, instead of just throwing a CEL. Too many service visits over gas caps I would imagine.

what kind of turbo modification do you have? if you don't have any, you can check the maintanence/warranty forum, i posted a similar thread recently.

Really? Hmmm....this was the case with both my VW's and my E92s. The VWs were more sensitive, because if you didn't turn the cap at least three times, the stupid light might come on.

It only happened once in my first E92--and now I can't remember if it was the CEL or something else.....hmmmmm.....

Even if you tightened the cap and it was ur problem, you still have to go to the dealer in order to get the light off. Sucks, but that's just the way that it is.

I wouldn't even mention the cap when I called them--just let them know the light came on and you would like to bring it in ASAP.

Check your grounding or the cap first.

You can always go to an AutoZone and ask them to scan your car for codes. They'll do it for free and leave the codes there if you want to take it to the dealer the next day. That way if it was just the gas cap you can have them clear it and enjoy your car worry free again.

if you find the gas cap loose then still take it to the dealer and tell the tech/SA that way they will just clear the code instead of speanding an hour looking for an EVAP leak.

I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure the code that gets set by a loose gas cap clears itself after a few restarts. There are usually several common codes that do that.

On GM cars even a random misfire will clear after a certain number of restarts. It's still logged so the tech can see it if they scan the car, but the light goes out.

like i said, i hope it was just a loose cap that happened a few days prior to my purchase,..b/c the same night the SES light came on...the next day i take it all the way off and poke my finger through the filler door (to "vent" the tank) and put it back on. Later That night, i noticed that the light was not on, and hasnt come back on since. I would still like the dealer to check it when i go back to get my plates

If a sporadic fault doesn't happen again, the MIL wil clear after a few drive cycles.

On my e90, it was 20 start cycles for the gas car CEL fault to reset.
