Not quite true, but it fits your narrative, so why not go for it?

Look, the point is whenever anyone says anything good about their 128i (not even in comparison to a 135i), it doesn't take long for the 135i owners to come out of the woodwork and start hurling insults. Even in the 128i sub-forum! On the other hand, if someone ventures into a thread where some guy is asking about a 128i, and some asshat posts a comment like "NEED MOAR TURBOZ!!!", we're all supposed to shrug it off.

Secondly, it's not at all about which car is "better." Better means different things to different people. Your 4,000 lb (yes, I'm exaggerating) land-barge of a convertible is not better than my coupe to me. It doesn't suit my needs. And vice-versa, I'm sure. Yes, the 135i is faster, but (we believe) the 128i is a great car on it's own merits, and I don't see any reason to be deferential to folks just because they shelled out more cash for their cars than I.

Well said. Let this thread die people haha. I'm tired of seeing it at the top every time I want to take a break and venture over here at work. And now that I noticed "choose" is spelled wrong in the title, its going to become even more annoying...

For the record, I wasn't kidding. I do think the 128i is the better BMW, when you're talking about traditional BMW values. I love my 135i, and I'd choose it again when selecting between the two, but I totally understand why someone would choose a 128i. A naturally aspirated engine plus the reduction in nearly 100 lbs (where it really counts) contribute to two things that I have historically associated with BMW: 1) the best possible chassis balance, even if you're not winning every drag race you get in to, 2) seamless, linear inline-6 power.

My 135i has always struck me more as a "mini muscle car" than a classic BMW. Go ahead and yell at me all you like. That's just how I see it.

LOL, that bugs me, too... And I also noticed people always misspelling "lose" with "loose" and "definately" with "definitely."

Wonder if the 328i/335i guys have this same argument? I'm scared to go look and waste an hour reading through similar smack.

Should have seen it over on bimmerforums when there were 323i's, 325i's, 328i's and 330i's... Then you also had ZHP in there. It got testy at times

Well over 100 lbs difference (the standard sunroof on the 135 is 50 lbs by itself), but otherwise... 100% agreed.

Oy, the inferiority complex is what drove ZHP-folk to make their own site, where they (we) ironically welcome all and never mention anything about one car being "better" than another. We call it "special" in a self-deprecating, sarcastic way.

I was also privy to the ridiculous MINI arguments: old Mini vs. BMW MINI, R53 vs. R50 ("JustaCooper"), R53 vs. R56, etc...

Bottom line: human beings are insecure animals who need to type stuff on the internet to make themselves feel better about the image they emit by the car they drive. Some do it with power (135i is better!), some do it with "purity," (128i is a real BMW!), but it's all the same cognitive underdevelopment and continued adult childhood (you know, man-children, that's us).

The thing that worries me is not the arguing, it's the fact that some people actually believe some of the crap they type regarding cars, the people who drive them, what they mean for the history or purity of a brand, etc... THAT is scary!

For some reason, "I bought what I like", is never good enough for some people.
Hence 128 vs 135 thread, coupe vs vert threads, auto vs manual threads. Its all what you like and want.

Like I said several years ago when this thread started (I think I was on the second page or something). In 2008 with the way the options were packaged, a 128 and a 135 the way I wanted them only had a 2K price difference. So I said "why not buy the faster one"

I dont regret that purchase in the least. I love my car, like I know you guys do too. So whats the problem?

Ohh and I misrepresented that one a bit. I was banned for arguing with Stig (the guy im trying not to argue with now) about relative chassis rigidity of vert vs coupe. And I said, that as the owner of both an E82 and a E88 that in everyday driving and in hard driving, there really isnt an appreciable difference in chassis rigidity, but that the vert isnt as stable over rough pavement.

Stig said that my AcitveE wasnt a coupe because it weighs 4500 lbs. My counter point was that since its heavier than the frame should be more stressed in hard turns than a normal E82, and that it just proves the point more that you really wont notice a rigidity difference.

The argument devolved from there into name calling on both sides and I was banned.

Thats neither here nor there, the point is that im happy with my purchases. And quite frankly you shouldnt call yourself a "car guy" if you shit on other people's choices (within reason, fart cans are still gross). The only requirement for being a car enthusiast is just that, enthusiasm.

So just be excellent to each other.

From a Vert stand point which adds another 300 lb. I still wouldn't have it any other way than a 135i.

That's a lot of weight taken off a pivotal point in the car.
I could never imagine opening my engine bay, and squeezing the weight of half a full sized adult in there.

*I'll source Ward's over your wikipedia entries any day:
"The all-aluminum N20 I-4 is about 22 lbs. (10 kg) lighter than the N52. Overall, the engine weighs 304 lbs." (138 kg).

yeah but in verts the weight balance shifts a bit rearward because of the roll bars.

49.8/50.2 for me!

This has turned into a silly thread. Everyone buys different cars for different reasons. That's why there is 50 flavors of ice cream to say the least. In my book 128 or 135 is a high class problem! Lets just have a and move on.

He was using it as a basis of comparison with his vert and then extrapolating how other coupes drive compared to verts from that.

... when the active e is 7 series weight.

Yes, it's funny to me when people say they bought what they like, then other people ascribe some sort of belief their liking. hahahahahah.

A: I bought a 135i because I like it.
B: You're not a true BMW driver. You may think your car is a BMW, but I say it's not a real BMW because the air is artificially forced into the engine thus making the boom go bigger thus making the car too powerful for true BMW standards. You must not like driving very much.
A: Hmph, okay!

A: I bought a 128i because I like it.
B: That's a girls' car because it's slow in relation to the 135i, plus, the number 135i is higher than 128i, so using my 5th grade emotional and intellectual level, I therefore say you're worse than I am due to that fact.
A: Really? Interesting!

I'm sorry you were banned - you seem like a reasonable person. I know Stig a little bit - he is a good man.

As I tell my students all day long: you can't control what people say to you, but you CAN control your reaction!

Now say it with me, people: we love BMWs!!!!
