Help! Engine temperature too high
I was driving this afternoon and my engine temperature warning came on..
The fan is going flat out. Using my BT ODB if I drive the temp quickly goes from mid 90s to 110+. Any thoughts as I'm stuck and I'd very much like to get home! |

Well I haven't gone over 120, the fan is full on though so something isn't right.
Wonder if it is a sensor? Thanks for the comment. |

Mine did that.
It was my water pump. I got a yellow light, then a red light on the dash. Couldn't drive anywhere. Had to be towed. Let it cool down a bit then try drive again shortly. |

Just be careful about driving around with a failed waterpump - you don't necessarily want to damage your engine. I'd get it towed to the nearest fixit place to be safe.

Thanks all, I think you are right.
I'm letting it cool and will drive the last little bit. It hasn't got to red yet but I'll do it in short steps. Cheers |

To be honest, I wouldn't want to drive it that far at risk of cooking it..
Will get it home first and then deal with it tomorrow. |

Well I got home without it reaching 120 so that bit is good at least!
I think the water level was low, opening the reservoir it was empty. Hasnt been a leak that I noticed so I'll take a look tomorrow when it is cold. Thanks all for your quick advice, much appreciated. |

I do not see how being low on coolant would make your car overheat. You have a bigger problem me thinks. IF you have access to a scan tool, check for waterpump failure codes. And besides when your car is low on coolant the BC will tell you that - and display a low coolant warning.
Did you ever see a yellow or red overheating icon? I would get your car checked out.

Didn't get any low coolant warnings although the reservoir was dry. I only have the Bluetooth OBD tool and an app on my phone to check, dont think I can check codes on that. Cheers |

HAVE YOUR CAR TOWED to a dealer or repair shop. You most likely need a new waterpump and thermostat. IF you do it yourself you are looking at about $550 in parts. There are a few DIY's here too, its not that hard of a job - so people say. AT the dealer its around a $1,200 repair.

Thanks, most likely I would do myself.
Any thoughts on where to get the parts? Edit.. Just realised you are in Germany! |

On my car the temp gauge hovers at about 110 - 115.
Overheat warning is most probably the water pump as the others have said. How many ks has the car done? Good luck, dont forget to tell us what it turns out. |

There must be someplace local to you though. Maybe some of the local guys can chime in now.

It seems to me, that a lot of the early 2008 & 2009 cars have waterpumps that fail early. But really by 80K kms to 100K kms... you are on borrowed time.

A new water pump is part of the regular 100,000 km service on most non performance cars. A turbo engine that sees higher temps like the N54 will cook water pumps quicker.
