I am so tired of all the misfires!

This thread is really just going to be me bitching about the n54 misfire ive been blessed with. im at the point of wanting to sell the car and never purchase another BMW. i started getting a misfire last year so i replaced the plugs and all seemed to be fine, at least for a few hundred miles. i then brought it to the dealer where they replaced all my injectors with the new updated ones and the problem wasn't fixed, so i figured i would replace the coils and the plugs again. After those the car ran fine for a few hundred miles again. when the misfire started again, i brought it to a friend who is a bmw tech, he noticed a mouse had chewed some of my coil pack and injector wires. i bought and replaced that, nothing changed after the wire harness so i gave up. after a few weeks of just ignoring the problem the misfire got worse and worse until the car would no longer fire on cyl1 at all. So i brought the car back to bmw where they found i had no compression on cyl 1. so now i have a new 0 mile long-block, new injectors, new coils, new plugs, new wire harness and now after 1000 miles... i have a misfire at idle. I will say that BMW service has been great, i just wish they could fix the damn car.

IF you drove the car with it misfiring you probably also damage(melted) your (main)cats. Not good nor cheap. The mouse damage you could claim under your insurance comp claim. G.L.

There is no cats in the car. the wire harness was only $300 so i just paid for it out of pocket rather than fighting with insurance. i just cant believe i still have a misfire after all that has been replaced.

Did you use BMW plugs? Or aftermarket ones? You should only use BMW ones, bought at a dealer. Some guys have chased misfire issues when using aftermarket Bosch plugs. There is some sort of a difference in teh internal ceramic core design.

Long block means block and head. The old head that is no longer on the car was blasted 5k miles before the motor went. it didnt change how the car ran at all. and i spoke with the tech this morning and it came with new oem bmw spark plugs.

Is the car tuned? Mix some racing gas in your tank and see how it runs then

I feel your pain!!!!!!! annoying and frustrating!
I have a bad injector on cylinder 3 that can be masked by limiting my psi on 1st and 2nd gear but now im having a misfire on cylinder 2, that seems to pop up regardless of which gear or RPM Im in when going WOT. and thats with new plugs, so i know its either the coil, or another injector going out....the struggle is real.

Maybe a bad O2 sensor? Or some form of other sensor causing bad readings/fuel adjustments?

I feel ya.. More power mod for mod with the N54, yes... But this is why I bought an N55. I deal with enough of the misfires and crap on these at work, I don't need one of my own

Just curious, what does a misfire feel like? Is it a vibration?

Its just a light jolt. you wouldnt notice it if you werent looking for it but from the outside you can hear it from the exhaust. when i lost compression in a cyl it felt like a vibration untill it didnt fire at all after a while.

Could also be described as a hesitation. The engine is running smoothly, then out of nowhere something interrupts the normal firing order of the cylinders and you get a moment of strangeness. If the car is under load when it misfires, you'll get a kind of hiccup or stutter where the power will go away for a moment. If it's at idle, it'll just kind of :utter:: for a second then regain its composure.
