Concealed Radar - Sothern California
Hi all!
Still basking in the glory of the E90. Does anyone here have experience or recommendations for installing concealed radar in so. cal., preferably san diego? I saw the thread on V1 but it is not completely hidden. Thanks!!! |

There used to bs some radar detectors with antennas designed for mounting behind the front grill. These may even still be available. The drawbacks include: (a.) reduced range because of low placement. (b.) moisture, dirt and bugs. (c.) no rear antenna
Question: Why do you want to hide it> Are you hiding it from cops or Californians? <g> |

I had several break-ins and radar detectors stolen from my Supras when I lived in Missouri. I lived in a nice area too.
I think it's a good idea to conceal it unless you always remove it from your window or visor when you park your car. |

Look through the V1 thread. There is an amazing install some guy does on his E60. A link to the M5 forums I think...

concealed systems are super expensive if you want one with the same power, range and coverage as say a V1. Is it concealed display you're looking for or for the unit itself to be concealed?

The best way of going about it is....
If you don't have the premium package, buy the upgraded rearview mirror...I'm sure you could find it online from a parts supplier for fairly a cheap price. You need this mirror for a power outlet. Next, look into this product called "Mike's Radar Mount". It's a clean little metal bracket that will allow you to have your V1, passport, etc.. to hang from the bottom of the rearview. You can also buy a tiny little power cord to make the install look more clean and flush. Finally, whenever you park your car just disconnect it from the mirror and place it in your glovebox. |

I was not aware that radar detector use had been outlawed in CA. It has been my understanding that they are only outlawed in the Commonwealth of Virginia and in the District of Colombia. Whe was the CA law passed? |

I thought they were legal in CA also! But when I got my windows tinted I asked the dude how much for a radar install he told me that radars are technically illegal in CA although you are allowed to buy them. He said it is the same as a gun which is legal to buy but not to use. Maybe he is wrong?? Does anyone know the story? Has anyone gotten a ticket for having a detector in CA? |

I hate when people post inaccurate information. and usually, they are very confident.
Please double check if you don't jack.

Radar jammers are illegal. Laser jammers are not. Anyone tried one? I've seen some pretty convincing video done by a bunch of regular dudes that go by the name 'Guys of Lidar'.

I looked at your other link and I actually installed my V1 the same exact way except its on the passenger side of the mirror rather than the drivers side. I think I have a pic up somewhere in the thread...

There is a thread you can search for where a member installed the V1 within his BMW mirror assembly. Pretty cool, but once it lights up, you can see the lights. I figured that's not "concealed." There is also a Stealth device that you can purchase that allows you to see the V1 display on your DVD Navi screen. I believe AW330i has a concealed V1, but I don't know how he concealed it. |

Radar detectors are legal in CA, yet I was told by a very frightening lady motorcycle cop that placing my V1 on my winshield within line of sight of the road is illegal. She could have been lying...but she appeared very serious about her job. It's now placed up high to the right of my visor .
