If I don't cut anything I'll have 6 ft of wiring when I need 18" without wiring it to the glovebox. Even after taking it to the glovebox I have 2-3' that I'm going to have to stash somewhere.

Tapping into wires that aren't normally hot will still power the radar? I have no normal power to my overhead unit, I have the bare bones wire harness setup.

Just use fuse 8. It covers all auxiliary equipment that turns on when the car does. It doesnt need constant power does it?

No it doesn't need constant power. I was planning on fuse 8, would the extra breaker fuse (included in the cable) cause any issues?

Nope. It's a really low amperage fuse. It doesn't draw much power at all.

If the OP is still around, or anyone else who has done it, did you completely remove the large torx bolt? I was in the middle of this job today, had it all done and just could NOT find a good ground. So tried this bolt, but it started to make a funky noise when loosened and I was afraid some nut or spring would fall off the back.

Does this bolt come out and go back in easily? As it is the perfect place for a ground wire. Thanks!

I will be using that same bolt but I'm not going to pull it out that far, just far enough to get a u-connnector behind it.

has a fuse and ground...no need to run to fuse box.

Just tap power from the mirror and you're set.
Great thread guys thanks!

I just purchased an Escort SmartRadar and hope to power it from the mirror using the short cable provided by Escort. I've tried to find a link of how to do this, but the note above is the closest I've found. Note, I have auto high-beams, not sure if that would change the install process as there are extra electronics packed into that mirror assembly.

Any helpful hints or thread links would be sincerely appreciated!

Well I had to end up running mine to the glove box because I have no sunroof and therefore no power through the wires I needed.

However I tapped power from my mirror in the Z4 and worked perfectly

Any insights on how to tap the power from the mirror? I have the same mirror as shown in the main thread of this column (with auto hi-beam sensors).
