Advans are also on the list but are fairly pricey. How about my question regarding the tread widths? For example, am I better off with the 8 inch RE71R than a 9 inch width MPSS? In order to get any of these higher performance tires I need to go to a smaller 235/40 tire.

I don't think the AD08R is expensive in $ per width, and it will be durable too. With much firmer sidewalls and ability to handle heat the AD08R is in a completely different category compared to the MPSS. I don't know anything about the RE-71, but I think its fair to question how well it is going to stand up on a heavy and powerful car with sustained track running.

Many of our customers like to run the Hankook R-S3, Dunlop Direzza Star Spec 2, and BF Goodrich Rivals for HPDE's if they are not ready for R-compounds yet. My personal favorite are the R-S3's.

I sound like a broken record.
RE-71Rs. Look at the amount of entrants in street tire classes as Nationals, all on BFGs or Bridgestones. Mostly Bridgestones |

And yes, RE-71R is like a treaded RComp compared to MPSS |

Don't even consider MPSS for an autocross/track tire, it's junk out there. Compound > width.

RE-71R is top dog for auto-x and supposed to be good on track. Beats PSS in basically any condition, although not sure about rain. It's still a very new tire.
RE-11, if you can find them, are an awesome proven street compound track tire that can deal with a lot of heat. Slightly better wear than RE-71R, and slightly less grip. You don't want PSS for a track day. They don't tolerate heat well. |

All these tires are in the 200 rating, which isn't comparable from brand to brand but I wouldn't expect more than 15,000 miles. Of course a lot of this will depend on your alignment specs.

I have been DDing RE71r's for a few weeks now and they are just fine. I have driven them in the rain a few times and they are no different than any other autoX street tire in the wet. I'm sure they will be awful once it gets a little colder, again like every other autoX street tire.
As far as tread wear on them it is too early to tell, but I never expect to get much more than 1 summer out of a set with dual duty. I only put about 7k miles on the car per year.

Beater w/ a heater is key. I drive an 01 outback wagon w/ 120k miles 6+ months out of the year.
*** I just saw you live in Florida so you probably don't have the same issues I do from Nov-April.*** I got a season and a half out of my last set of ZII's but I didn't race much last year and switched over to the 71r's due to the fact that they were much faster and I picked up two nails in three weeks. I can't really speak to the longevity of the 71r's but two summers isn't out of the question for ZII's depending on autox duty.

Thought I'd share my tracking experience with PSS's.
The PSS's, which came with my car, made great street tires but could not cope with aggressive track driving. I have since moved on to ZII's which offer much better grip, response and overall confidence. The PSS's have about 10k street miles, 2 autox days, and 6 days of track duty (only about half of the sessions being dry). Both fronts have failed and started ripping at where the bead touches the wheel rim. The tech who changed my tires thinks it was due to excessive heat. Also notice the excessive sidewall wear due to rolling over. |

At the end of my time with my set of MPSS with "agressive" street only driving, my front side wear was worst than the picture above. In fact, with -2.3* of camber up front, the cords started showing on the outside before the inside, weird stuff. Highway 33 out here is no joke for tires.

First year I did RE11's (225/40R18F + 255/35R18R) on lightly modded car Second year I did ZII's (255/35R18 squared) with more power. This year I did ZII-SS (255/35R18 squared) with a lot of power, and better suspension. In 2016, I will be looking for more grip thatn the ZII_SS can offer, on 17x8.5 style 68's or 18x8.5 style 261's RIMS (due to budget). I will continue to run a square setup. I am considering 255/40R17 Nitto NT01's or something as sticky this time around. Not entirely against RE-71R's or R-S3's, but only if they are way better than the ZII-SS...

I think everyone in the autoX world will agree that the RE71R is hands down the tire to have. Look at nationals, and even the top times in local events, and I will guarantee they were all on the bridgestones.
I did three major things to my car for the two months of the season (rear sway, sub frame inserts, and Re71r's). Granted the STX competition is pretty light in Illinois for some reason, I have gone from a second back in STX to the top of the class. I think that the tires had quite a bit to do with my new found speed. I am yet to drive against the fast STX RX8 & FRS in Central Illinois (CCSCC) but I am looking forward to it at the last event of the season (Nov 14-15). If the fast FRS/BRZ folks in CS in the Chicago Region bump to STX next year I'll be back to mid pack, but I will want to be on the RE71's if they do, that is for sure. As far as the life of the RE71r's mine have take a pounding and are probably half gone after 6 or so events and a test and tune with at least 15 runs. I was handing out my keys to other people to get feedback and I lost count of the total runs that day. They got some heat in the test and tune and seemed to hold up great. I am sure there are others that have some tire temp data to show when the tires are at their best, but my tire pyro died this year and I am not competitive enough to record that stuff anyways. I mainly used the tire pyro for my alignment specs a few years ago and then stopped bothering with it every weekend. Now I set my pressures and drive. I am going to start next season on the RE71's I have on the car now and see what the other manufacturers come up with to compete. But right now they are the tire to have.

You're may be right, these are, for me, two completely different disciplines. On the track, the RE71R won't be as good as Pirelli Tropheo-R or Michelin PS Cup 2 ...
