spare tire retrofit
Just curious, anyone out there retro-fit a spare tire kit for their one? I just ordered new wheels and non-runflat tires. I will throw a can of fix a flat in the car, and have that for around town, but I would like to get a spare for road trips, travelling, etc.
Does anyone know of any sort of spare kit you can buy? Or maybe I could build one, was thinking about going to salvage yard and trying to find spare tire kit out of some sort of late model BMW. Anyone done this? Ryan |

Do a search because there is already a kit out there you can buy for the 1 that some here on this forum have purchased.

Having driven a MINI since '04 this was my kit:
Green Slime http://http://www.slime.com/product_...e_Sealant.html An Air compressor that plugs into the cig lighter (a must have at the track) I had the above at all times...but from time to time, when I got the notion, I also carried a tire in a tire tote. P.S. the MINI came with the tire tool kit

See link below. You can get a donut spare for around $75. I picked one up a few months ago. As with most donut spares, this one is perfect. It is old, but in great condition. It is a 17" steel wheel with a +30 offset and will clear the 135i front calipers with ease (I've test fitted on front and back). I only use it on road trips as well. Not something you want in your trunk every day.

Having BMW roadside I would think when replacing the run craps with non RFs as long as I had an air compressor or fix a flat I would be ok without a spare... anyone else agree??
If a complete blow out happened the roadside assistance would help (at least until your warrenty is up)... then I would probably think about getting the spare..

in my area, especially in incliment weather, roadside assistance wait time can be HOURS. and if i had a blow out in a questionable area of town, i'm not certain i'd want to wait either. its all risk assesment, it probably wont happen....BUT when it does... |

I sent just the link to the website because I couldn't find any wheels in stock at the time. They are a used parts house so they don't always have every part. Give them a call. I think they can be slow to put their parts on their site.

The other problem with the "slime" or "fix a flat" is if your air valve goes bad as mine did on my old honda. Fix a flat doesn't fix that. I had to put the spare on and get the valve replaced. I definitly don't want to wait 2hours for a tow. So may have to find a spare for winter time when I switch to non runflat winter tires.
So a spare would be useful. Maybe a junk yard has an older 3 series with spare and pick up a jack and wrench kit.

Here is an open thread about a spare that seems to be working for the E9x guys over on Bimmerfest's forum. One other user as well as myself has asked whether there is any knowledge of its 1er fitment. Only time will tell or someone will have to bite the bullet and order it and hope it fits.

and even here: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...85&postcount=1 Just be sure you get a flat-fixer that won't damage those expensive sensors. Have Fun, Rick |
