New From Dinan: Stage 3 ECU; Oil Cooler; and Intercooler

Scoping out the Dinan Web site today, and they have a Stage 3 engine tune good for 398 HP :headbang:

They also have an oil cooler and an intercooler - and both are required for the Stage 3 tune. But you better have a clutch, 'cause the intercooler and oil cooler are only listed for manual trans.

They also announced their 135 exhaust.

Go get 'em

Have Fun,
Rick

Yup, except it pissed me off when I called to get details of the exhaust routing and install, but tech support refused to answer my questions until I actually owned the product, and transferred me to Sales...which was unavailable.

I just want to know the following:

cat or axle back?
cut and clamp or bolt on flange?

Keep in mind they're quoting flywheel numbers, not at the wheels.

It's a lot of money for a lot less power than the other aftermarket guys are getting with the same mods IMO.

talked to Dinan this morning - the Stage III setup will be available for the auto soon. they wanted to test the fitting of the intercooler further. expect the "okay" in about a week or two.

Granted the Stage 3 software with the Dinan oil cooler and intercooler will help engine longevity. However, it's still a very expensive upgrade for a 14hp gain over Stage 2.

That Dinan intercooler looks very similar to the Code3 intercooler?

Eh? The point of Dinan is that what BMW doesn't cover, Dinan will, to the point that there's no difference at all in the warranty coverage. That's something that no other company has.

From what I understand it is the same spearco core. The difference is the shroud in the front which isn't going to do much. It's looks like an excellent IC but the code3 is a lot less expensive for basically the same thing. They say they decreased pressure drop by 0.7 psi with the dinan, which seems in line with what the code3 numbers.

I hope BMW offers one and Dan can give us a good deal.

1700 for an intercooler?

ARE THEY OUT OF THERE MIND??

COME ON PEOPLE....

You can get a pro mod dragster air/water 5" intercooler for less.

This is complete garbage, I am so dissappointed with these prices, i would rather have one custom made by a metal worker and it will come out to half price with labor and materials.

EDIT:

I dont wanna hear "Oh this is a BMW performance part, it is taylored specifically for this unique engine combination bla bla bla"

It's a peice of metal, and when compared to other intercoolers it is NO different. Besides the fact that it may be a low volume part, i will give you that. But even as a low volume part it should be no more than 600-700 bucks tops.

These guys could probably fab one for less, and it would be better.

Rant off.

One thing about Dinan that seems to go over a lot of people's heads here is the badge value. $1,700 for an intercooler is way more than anyone should pay - however, if you want to say 'it's Dinan' then you have to pay. A rolex tells time about as well as a timex......you get the point.

When I was younger and would see a Dinan badget car go by, it'd be all 'wow....wish I had one'. I don't care anymore, though there's a lot of people that do and the money's not an issue - or, the warranty ends up being the tie-breaker.

But, to re-iterate, Dinan makes you pay for the badge/brand - the warranty cost on average is likely far less then the cost differential on the components - unless, of course the owners of Dinan corporation are struggling to make ends meet.....lol

Hm... I usually go wow and I see an M badged car go by or a AMG.. Dinan hmmm ya pay all that I might as well get a M3.. just saying its like saying ok instead of paying for a highest end seiko watch adding all the extra rings, straps and limited edition signs I rather get a rolex.. you get that point  and I highly doubt dinan would cover a blown engine if their ecu causes that.. if they do ok thats a different story because the engine is a huge cost towards the worth of the car...

Dinan badge If someone wanted a dinan badge they could buy one off of ebay for $4 and then get a JB3, RR ehaust, Code3 spearco intercooler (same thing as dinan), and some downpipes. Then they would have a car faster than ANY dinan 135i that exists and they would have their vanity badge. Seriously, you can't just throw a M badge on a 335i and call it an M3 because the body looks different and people would just laugh. But how would anyone know you paid $4 rather than 10K for your dinan badge??

There are Dinan badges other than the "DINAN" on the back of the car that you get when you rack up 10 Dinan points.

Well, it's all good - I'm just saying in BMW folklore, Dinan has a place. Is it worth the premium today? In my opinion - no, but I certainly would never knock anyone for spending the money.

My [car] dreams have two recurring themes - M performance and Riss Racing.

Then I wake up to our recession based reality. Warranty.....and hopefully recession will run out by April 2012. I'm saving up!
