Downsize fleet hu, sounds like you have deep pockets wish I had that problem If the beater is needed buy one, older pickups (early 80' 6 bangers) are good buys, easy to work on and parts are not expensive |

I've seen people with 12 year old cars that had high mileage, but still looked like new, because they took care of them. That's all it takes.

My daily is a 2008 X3 and my other garage queen is an S52 powered E30. I also pay $500/yr insurance for both cars due to low-mileage, weekend only usage. BUT ok - keep getting door dings and losing resale value. These are mass-produced cars after all.

Drive it! I drive a work truck most of the time but anytime I'm going out running to a store I take the 1. My brother has a 2004 M3 he's owned it since new it has 108k now on it. We recently installed new subframe bushings and koni yellows/springs to refresh the suspension and the paint is amazing considering its a daily and over 10years old

I've also been pondering the "beater" dilemna myself since my commute recently changed from regional passenger train to a short 60km a day (37.5 miles) drive. My car has over 120,000kms (75,000 miles) on the odometer and I'm trying to work out the business case for whether it would be less expensive to make it a weekend car and purchase a daily driver beater rather than driving the 1er every day + paying the potential maintenance costs with more mileage and eventually having to replace it with another Bimmer sooner. Also of concern would be the few days a year that we get heavy snow where the 1er would simply get stuck on the commute (think I've decided to just try and work from home in these cases).
I've just about decided that since its fully paid for I'll keep it and try to find ways to lower the maintenance costs once CPO warranty is up next year. Dream is to make the 1er the "beater" and get a Boxster S for the summer. Fingers crossed that as it ages this car is cheaper to maintain year over year than it would be to replace it with a "newer" used CPO 1er. Now my friend has a 2007 Honda Civic SI and he doesn't want it to see winter ever even to the point where he's considering buying another, higher mileage Civic SI to use in the winter and for part sharing. Now I think THAT'S irrational but hey. I'd definitely make that the winter beater and save up for a nicer summer car but hey, who am I to say what to do with his money? |

I must confess at one point I had a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee as a beater/dd and the 135i when it was new. The Jeep needed work every 2-3 months. Then I sat down and did the math. I realized I'd spend an equivalent amount of money with financing a later model used nice car as a beater than I did with the low purchase price of my jeep but with constant repairs!! The last straw came when I replaced an o2 sensor on the jeep and it died on the way home on the NJTP.

It really depends on where you live. I use a beater because the winters here ruin driving for me. A joyless drive deserves a joyless car.
In our state, the salt used on the roads and constant moisture exposure has real affects on the car's condition.
