JB3 Used or New?
Hi guys, been lurking on here since I got my 135i Crimson Red Convert in 2008. Finally decided I needed some advice. Seems like the JB3 is overwhelmingly the tune of choice on the forum. So I've decided to go with it, but before I purchase I wanted to ask a few questions.
Are there any disadvantages to trying to find a used JB3? If no, then where would you suggest I look? (For example, is there a post with used JB3's that I might have missed?) If new is the route to go, then just simply going straight to Burger the smart choice ( read good things about the customer support)? Thanks for the advice. Smitty |

Nothing wrong in buying a used JB3. If you're buying one used make sure the pins on the PNP harness aren't damaged. You can upgrade any version of the JB3 whether it be a Gen 1 board, Gen 2 board or Gen 3. Only Gen 2 / 3 can run the 2.0 firmware. To do data logging and switch maps via a laptop you need gen 3.
Gen 3 is identified by a small DB9 connector on the end opposite of the Harness connector.

Thanks Chester, where do you suggest I look for used ones? Didn't see anything on the forum. Call Burger? You think they might have some in stock?

Unless the wires or pins or unit is damaged, there is absolutely nothing negative about buying a used JB unit. it's not something that "wears out" after a while or anything.
If you email or PM terry, once in a while he might have something used available. It's not a guarantee, but it happens, and you can get a good deal straight from him without relying on 3rd parties. I know a while ago he has a special on used JB2's or something like that from all the people that upgraded, so I'm sure he has a few used JB+'s and JB3's lying around. It's always worth a try

One last question, is there a way to tell the version from the outside? Or is it something you have to have a cable or laptop to tell. I thought I read somewhere that the device could be updated with different versions of the software.

I know Burger has used JB+ from time to time because people trade up the the JB3. I picked one up from Terry that way and couldn't be happier. Not sure if he ever has used JB3's but worth an email to him.
Not only would I keep an eye on the used section but would post a WTB which might accelerate your purchase.

Good advice, thanks Bart. Seems like if you can find a JB3 used and if the connectors aren't damaged you can save a little cash.
Now I just need to find some CSL style rims in 19'' with the right offset and I'll be happy. Sold my M3 convert and really like the 19'' look. There are almost zero 135i Converts in Richmond so I might not see anyone running those rims. |
