Dont know how you arrived at the conclusion that he is unemployed or how that would have anything to do with his intelligence (to be candid - based on your comments in this thread, I question yours) or his position on the matter? or being RIGHT?

you don't know anything about me so don't go make an ass out of yourself. my whole issue with some comments on this thread was people just grasp at anything posted on the internet and immediately think it's holy scripture. just because some mechanical engineer with seemingly no experience in the auto industry makes some claims doesn't mean we should all sing kombaya. I never claimed to be an expert in this field and my comments were carefully worded to not come across as a know it all. something I can't say about other posts on this thread. people feel very strongly about what they like to believe and I am not trying to change anyone's mind. you are certainly allowed to believe whatever you like to believe but to just crash in and make sweeping definitive statements and then present opinions from who knows who as holy scripture is just simply absurd.

I dont buy the "ram air" conclusion... because the tune, be it factory or aftermarket, will auto adjust for a certain load no matter what... but taking in cooler air via a front grill scoop design will lower the intake air charge temps and thus be a lot better for performance then open air filters sitting in a hot engine bay...

but of course there are so many variables to test it all wouldnt be cost effective and thus everyone just does what they want on an emotional level of what in their mind is the better choice usually. Ive seen no dyno's or real world number proving the scoops improve ET's or track times so in conclusion do whatever makes you sleep at night. lol

It's a discussion based on a simple question. Why can we not discuss and debate this in a muture manner?

There is not one solution that applies to every scenerio. Hence why I posed the question about the venturi affect (creating opposing vacuum on intake) on the horizontal stock intake at higher speeds.

Basically it would appear the greatest gains would be to remove the restiction as opposed to trying to compensate for it. I realize BMW has designed an intake that is efficient at stock levels. I question whether or not it is ample at higher levels. If it is, we should effectively be able to close one of the intakes above the radiator at stock levels and see no change in performance. Then theorectically it would be more likely (but not certain) that the stock system can support twice the boost. Yes I realize this is way over simplifing it as I doubt the volume of air required is linear as the boost is increased.

I know this is a little off topic, but you guys got me thinking. I've always thought those openings in the front must be restrictive. I decided to go out to the garage and measure the openings and compare the cross-section to the inner diameter of the air box exit pipes. The inner diameter of the air box outlets on the N54 was approximately 48mm giving a total cross-section of 1,809 sq/mm x two outlets The plastic OEM down scoops actually narrow in the bend. The cross-section is a right-angle trapezoid. At the narrowest part the right angle lengths were 34mm high on one side, 142mm long, and 14mm on the other side. I came up with a cross-section area of 3,408 sq/mm x two openings. Now I recognize air travels differently around a bend and in a square-ish pipe, but it would appear that BMW gave us nearly two time the cross-section in the front openings when compared to the pipes leaving the air box. I don't know what this means, but thought it may be interesting to someone.

No, I think that is a good point..nice job.

One thing to note in those 90 degree bends you reference....they're on a radius as is virtually all of the bends in the intake....gee, wonder why BMW didn't put in right angles....again, why I think the Cyba scoops are designed more for simplicity of manufacturing and looks as opposed to functionality.

Airfilter will play it's part on incoming air turbulence. From there it can go to another "XXX" part...throttlebody. Just prodding the fire I guess. Have at it fellas.

Same concept. "Forcing" air into the intake area is the same idea as "ram air" in this case.

Also, for another matter, the amount of air you PULL into the car is controlled directly by the cars exhaust tract and the wastegates. There is no way to push more air past the turbine blades.

2nd edit: that's not to say I don't think they look cool and for $40 and a can of white spray paint I couldn't have a nice subtle detail piece, but that $40 could easily be spent elsewhere right now.

If you get the scoops don't paint them since all you are doing is adding weight, which causes the car to go slower.

The intake location for the stock CAI is in a very high pressure area, the front of the grill. "Scoops" add nothing to that because there is already more air piled up at the openings then the intake tract can take in. The factory designed it that way & there is noting new about using that location for the start of the intake tract.

The aftermarket scoops are strictly for show no matter what the guys trying to make a $100 off them claim.
