Problem with run flats
I purchased my 135i in 2010 with sport package. The car came with low profile sport tires Dunlop run flats. I have owned the car for about a year and a half now and have about 15k miles on the car. In the time I have gone through 5 tires and 2 rims! Thank god I purchased the tire insurance because I would of been out close to 3k by now!*
Anyway there is one tire in the back that is original and after 15k of miles on it it gets a bubble so i go to have it replace only to be told I don't have enough tread for warranty! I flipped out I have 15k miles on that tire and it's doesn't have enough tread? Plus the tire was $475 to replace! They also pointed out that the front tire that they replaced just 4k miles ago is worn on the inside so that tire is now out of warranty! A Alinement is going to be $200 so i said give me the car I will take it somewhere else.* So I go to tire rack and get the front tire for $380 , I then go to get the Alinement done for $99 when they tell me they can't do the Alinement because my control arms are loose! They said this should be covered and to bring it back to BMW. So I am taking it back to have them look at it to verify if the control arms are shot. My guess is if they are it's from these ruff riding run flats. And if that is the case then BMW owns me a new tire because I had one on there that prematurely wore out due to the faulty control arms! I am beside myself right now I love this car but these tires they put on are just awful! I baby this car and even try and avoid pot holes! But living in northeast the roads here are just crappy! I really hope BMW does the right thing here and makes good on such a bad product they put on their cars. Because I really don't want to go sour on these cars because of tires! Has anyone else with the sport package 1 series had to change their tire multiple times? People I know who own 3 series had simular stories and they were the ones who convinced me to get the tire insurance through BMW.

Wow this just sucks!! I have had the runflats for 14k miles now and i really don't have any issues with them aside that they don't offer much grip on the wet. Other than that they have plenty of thread and no bubbles so far(fingers crossed). Shouldn't the bubble be covered by the tire manufacturer instead of BMW??? This bubbling crap is a deflect in manufacturing.

I drive a 128i and my stock run flats are over 19k now with no issues. Tread is pretty well gone, however, so new, non-run flats are going to have to happen soon.

They handle great in the rain once the car is in motion, however with mild accelerating the traction light flashes too much. Thinking about replacing them with micheln PSS, just worried about all the comments about a decrease in turn in.

Since our roads rarely see snow they are in great condition compared to the ones in the northeast therefore runflats are more tolerable down here. So far the grip issue is my only beef that and the fact that they cost almost $400!!!

I think what I will do is run the RFT until they need replacing or something serious happends to them and then switch to Mitchlin. I have always loved the way they handle.

Before that I went through two sets of RFT's in about 20k miles and had three flats during that time. One flat left me stranded in the middle of nowhere, 130 miles from the nearest BMW dealership. |

What did you guys drive prior to the 1er that you expect more than 15-20k from a set of high performance summer tires? I went through a set of Yokohama A048 in 6k on my Lotus with zero track days or burnouts - and that car weighed <2,000lbs. 20k is a ton of miles for a high performance tire. I have around 20k on my factory tires and the rears are just about shot - I am thrilled with how long they lasted!

Question on run-flats: When you do get a flat supposedly you can run on them for some period of time to get you to a repair shop. But does that essentially mean the tire is ruined and you need a new one? I know many times when I've gotten a flat I take the tire off, get it plugged and its good to go for about $5 rather than a new tire.

If the tire was punctured and not holding air and you drove on it for a period of time, you likely put enough strain on the tire wall to warrant replacement. If it's a slow leak you can usually get that patched.

I have the sport package. 22,000 miles and five track days later, I finally replaced the run flats. Never had a problem, other than a nail in one tire, which Discount Tire patched for free (BMW wanted to replace the tire, for about $10k )
Got some Hankook Ventus V12 Evos, took them to the track this weekend. Love them. Don't feel the pressing need for a suspension upgrade, that many have mentioned, either. I thought about having a friend bring an alloy spare back from Europe, but opted for a slime kit, instead.

Sounds normal to me. Nobody should be shocked about replacing rear tires at 15k... I also didn't change my tires on my GTI but I only had it for 16 months (about 16k miles).

If you have the BMW tire and wheel warranty, count your blessings.. If you have another sold by the dealer, they may have a cap on the amount to reinburse on your claims.. some go to 3000.00 ( the fine print lets them cancel at any point, check your policy ) look at the locations of the people that say they never bend a wheel or have very few tire issues... Its an east cost / west coast issue.. hopefully control arms arent bent, as then it would be your issue .. If the bushings are just shot, then its BMW's .. check the top of the strut housings and see if they are "mushroomed" that would be your issue also. BMW has nothing to do with it.. just go ask some one with 18"/19" runflats on other makes and models in the North east... its the same story. Good Luck.. also if you change your tires to Non runflats, check with your tire and wheel ins to see if they will cover them.
