Im so glad I waited for the 2009, I didnt realize they were getting rid of the flip screen.

I would LOVE to have the new iDrive. I especially like the new buttons. But I couldn't wait. Even the delivery is killing me! (~20 days and counting)

Like most guys, I am a tech toy geek but somehow I find that any built in NAV will eventually become dated and almost take away value of a car in the long run. (unless you buy cars every year or two) I find it cheaper to replace a Tom Tom every couple of years, while still staying up with the technology by just replacing it. This is hard to do in a built in NAV, even though updates do help keep it current, the interface will be difficult to change as technology changes.
Also, in the one series, a built-in NAV looks out of place. Isn't this car supposed to be a minimalist "Driving Machine". Back to the roots of the BMW origins. (not before the planes though). If I was looking to keep a 1 series as a collectors car, I would shy away from the NAV.

That said, the new NAV looks much better than the old one. Also, I hope they fixed the polarized sun glasses issue.

As an additional safety feature, the 3-door and 5-door models of the BMW 1 Series will be fitted as standard with crash-optimised seatbacks and headrests for the driver and front passenger seat as of autumn 2008, reducing the risk of injury to the cervical spine in the event of a rear-on collision.

I wonder if this means the seats will be changing shape. Sounds like a new headrest anyway.

I didn't opt for the nav system - too expensive, but I also have bad experiences with other recent built-in nav systems partly owing to the whole liability issue. Basically, manufacturers are trying to limit their liability risks by limiting nav system functionality when driving. You can see the map and follow guidance, but you can't set a new destination unless you put the car in park. Is that true with BMW? It's extremely annoying if you have or are a passenger who wants to change the navigation especially on a highway. On the other hand, given how stupid people already are with cell phones and blackberries while driving, you can understand the manufacturer's concerns.
A portable GPS is pretty much a cheaper, more flexible solution.

Not sure if it is the same in the 1series - but when i had the new m3, i was able to change the destination without being parked. Had to be parked to watch TV though. :biggrin:
