2013 135i vs 2013 135is
I'm a little late to the table. Other than the HP and Torque differences what else, cosmeticly and mechanically are the differences between the 135i and 135IS? Does the IS have additional cooling? Lighter wheels? Website at bmwusa not so much help. Thanks for input. I will be ordering one in the next couple of days.

Different exhaust, mirrors, seat stitching (black with blue stitching), interior badges, different wheels. Not sure on the wheel weights but they do *look* lighter haha.

^ +1. Also comes standard with sporty black grilles on top of the black mirror caps.

I wonder if it's as insanely fun to drive as my 2012 135i. I really have to go back to my dealer and ask if this level of mirth is normal. I hope it's covered under my warranty.

One add-on, in my opinion, that is worth it is the BMW performance exhaust. I got my 2013 a couple of months ago and had the exhaust installed at the port. The sound is worth the price of admission....cold starts sound incredible! Can't speak to performance or HP gains, but the sound makes it for me...doesn't drone on the highway either.....

I wondered the same when I ordered and decided on the 135i, not only for the cost savings but it allowed me to customize the car the way I wanted to, for less than the extra cost of the 135is.

I am not saying the car is bad. Its a great car. I would just rather mod a 135i the way I want to rather than pay BMW a premium to mod the car for me. Thats all.

That's my philosophy as well, but I certainly understand why people would want to stick with BMW as well. Same as with Dinan, the warranty is worth it, plus, you never have to worry about whether or not a part is quality. I remember when all of these 1 series mods were just coming out a few years ago when the 1er was pretty new, and it was always a gamble to try out a new product. With BMW's own performance products, or Dinan, that's never a concern. However, BMW and Dinan are expensive and won't give you the best performance all-around. The performance exhaust sounds great, but I think my Berk exhaust (midpipes and axleback) sounds better. It's also cheaper. But... it's louder, and if something goes wrong with it BMW won't back it up (but, since it's just an exhaust, nothing will... this really applies more to other parts).. Not everyone wants to tap into their ECU with a JB4, or even possibly lose their warranty due to a Cobb tune. While most of the "is" package is actually aesthetics, the PPK (complete with another oil cooler if I'm not mistaken, which actually may be worth it), and performance exhaust alone are worth the upgrade price for some who don't want to mess with their nice new car. I used to be in that mindset... didn't want anything beyond a JB+ and an axleback. But the mod bug bit me and now my car's getting a little out of hand haha. And, are there any actual suspension upgrades to the is? I didn't think there were but I could be wrong. Either way, the BMW performance suspension is too soft for me, but perfect for a lot of people. I don't think I've heard of anyone who isn't happy with theirs. But it's the same principle. It's from BMW, and for some people that matters more than a sportier suspension.

If you're not into the BMW products (wheels, PPK, etc...), then it's not worth the price. IF those are the items you'd be shopping, then you get a lot for the $. I think the wheels alone take up most of the price difference if you wanted to add on later.
I would have bought the regular 135i but I found more aggressive pricing on the 135is for some reason. My price difference at the end of the day ended up only being $2,000 at the dealership I was working with, so at that point it was a no-brainer.

Going with the 135is
New to the community, will be taking delivery of my first BMW in about 12 weeks!
Ordered the 135is convertible. When comparing the 135i and 135is, I was initially thinking 135i, but then I saw the attached 135is at a dealer in Texas and it was game over. Styling is always subjective, but the carbon black with the 135is-specific wheels made my jaw drop from across the parking lot. Being overly analytical, I subsequently mulled it over in my mind some more and decided that for a bit more than the price of the Technology Package (assuming the buyer is getting the Sport Package with the 135i), I could upgrade to the 135is. Being new to BMW, I'm buying the car to actively enjoy driving it...so for me, the extra dollars were better spent on items that would enhance the driving experience I want from the car. For those considering the Technology Package that own a Siri capable iPhone with the new OS update...I found in testing the car out at a dealer with my iPhone 4S plugged in to the provided cable that I could reach down and hold the main button on the phone to activate Siri. While not thrilled with the first Siri release, the latest version seems to work well. I was easily able to make calls or select my music using Siri over the cars sound system and microphone. I recognize for some that the Technology Package might be essential, but for my needs, I went for the 135is without the Technology Package over the 135i with that package. OK, probably way too long of a post! Last edited by NavyChop93; 01-17-2013 at 06:19 AM.. |

Thanks for all your input. I went with the 135i. LaMans Blue black interior, MSport, DCT, heated seats, Bluetooth, Harman Kardon. That's about it. Really needed to meet a price point. Also although the 135is wheels look great on most colors I don't particularly care for them on LaMans Blue. Will probably put Alufelgen reps. On anyway. I drive a 2010 135i Space Grey now that I will be selling, so I know it's enough power already, I did like the extra cooling, and modest power bump of the 135is but not willing to pay for it.
