Exclamation Planning to do 1st oil change by myself

I am planning to do an oil change by myself for the first time for my 2008 128i.

What type of torque wrench and sockets would you guys recommend?

On a seperate note, I am using 7 quarters of the 0W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil.

Did you go to the DIY section? There is one posted by JimD for his 128i convertible.

Tekton 24330. Its 3/8 inch drive. Eventually you'll want a 1/2 inch drive for wheel nuts too.

I have a 3/8" and 1/2" torque wrench. I got mine from Harbor Freight. They have them on sale for ~$10 each all of the time.

I'd recommend the oil filter cap tool. The cap is plastic (pretty sure N52 is pretty much the same as my N54) and my first DIY oil change I used a generic auto-sizing oil filter wrench, but it made me nervous that I'd mark or gouge the cap. I wrapped it in a rag and all so I was ok, but the second time after I bought the cap tool I was happier with not having to worry about gouging the cap with my normal/generic oil filter wrench tool.

This is the one I have, worth the $20 in my opinion, nice aluminum unit:

I believe it will work on the N52 as well, but worth double checking or maybe someone else can confirm for sure.

The torque wrenches that have been recommended are all inexpensive clickers. These are prone to get out of calibration, and you'd never know until something bad happens. The chance that you'll check the calibration, ever, approaches zero.

Here's my choice. Comes with a certified test certificate, and dials tend to maintain their calibration much better than clickers.

Pricy for a Toyota owner, not so much for a BMW owner. Particularly when you think that torque specs are pretty much only given for critical fasteners.

This is an intriguing possibility, but their track record is pretty much unknown. I bought one for giggles, and it matched my CDI very well.

Personally, I'd trust this, long term, over any clicker. Clickers are basically speed tools for time pressured professionals, who will buy good ones and routinely check them. Home guys often buy them simply because they're ubiquitous and cheap models are common.
