125i vert steptronic confuses me
Let's say you're looking at a 125i vert steptronic because the other half can't drive stick.
Now you need to go faster than your other half who drives a twin turbo X5 auto (0-100km/h @ 7.2s) What exactly is the performance/time for your 125i auto vert? BMW aust. quotes 7.5s - (oh no too slow!) which we suspect is conservative (but then maybe the X5 times are conservative too). Car & Driver's recent short review quotes 5.8s for the manual (?do we add about 0.5 s for the auto) to 60mph - so maybe about 6s for 62mph (100km)? then maybe 6.5 s for the auto? I'm sure I've seen some lowish times quoted for the AUTO VERT 125i on other articles. Am I doomed to eat my partner's dust? Can anyone provide more accurate or conclusive data? (I note the US gets 128i which has a couple more horses). CAN I BEAT 7.2s????? (manhood could be at stake) thanks for any help |

Also, I believe the auto box in the 135i is different from the 125i and only looses about 0.1 sec to 100kph (compared the the manual) instead of about 0.8 sec in the 125 (compared to the manual).

Interesting. I testdrove a 125i steptronic (to sample the engine, not the gearbox) and I thought it felt a bit sluggish. You had to be very aggressive with the accelerator to make it change down and go. Which is why I don't like autos generally. The 123d manual was much quicker feeling. But damn the 125i sounds good, specially in a vert. I would have bought a 125i manual if Belgium didn't tax that engine into oblivion.

Guys - not helping!!
We KNOW about the 135, but my manhood is already on the boat ready to be delivered. Is it just a matter of manipulated numbers or is there really no hope?!! PS on test drive it felt plenty quick. With regards to the sluggish comment, maybe the sprint booster would solve that (though it shouldn't make u any quicker)? |

I still haven't driven the steptronic box. And my 135 arrived in Melbourne today!!!
If it's crap, maybe I'll hang onto the TT.

In that case it will definitely be fine! My sluggish comment arose as I stepped straight from a 123d manual into a 125i auto. And well, those turbos help a lot! If you find that you do get dragged then you can always go for a remap...

Hey Sevo,
In my opinion you need to prioritize, if you feel that the need to beat that low 7 second time is so important then you'll need to go up to the 135i or perhaps to the 125i coupe. Theres really no way around it im afraid..... In my own personal experience i test drove the 125i Vert auto and 120i auto back to back before i made my purchase and im afraid the 125i Vert just didnt really feel that fast, a mid 7 second 0-100 quoted time by BMW really felt spot on..... It was a big reason why i opted for the slower 120i as for my intended usage in the daily city traffic grind a mid 7 second 0-100 time to me wasnt worth the 15k premium over the 120i. Of course everyones needs are different..... I think perhaps if you feel the need to prove your 'manhood' with 0-100 times is so strong then you definitely must buy a 135i..... I think you'll find the coupe works out to be only a few thousand more than a non optioned 125i Vert auto, and if price isnt an issue then just get the 135i Vert that way you can have your cake and eat it too. Cheers Anthony |

Ahhh i just saw your post about it being on the ship......
Well i think you may have lucked out with trying to outdrag your wifes 4WD. But really who cares! once your plodding along with the top down on a nice sunny day enjoying the weather and scenery as only a convertible car can you'll find 0-100 times really mean jack squat.:biggrin: |

VonBeige, unfortunately I agree about the 125i Auto. Drove it, and whilst it was faster than the 120i, it didn't feel significantly so. 135i sure did, and since there is so much torque you don't need to give the accelerator the little extra stab prompting it to shift down. Hence I think the auto "feels better" in the 135i than the 125i and 120i.

My wife turned her nose up at the thought of getting an auto. God bless her!
Sevo -- sorry mate, but I think you'll have to resign yourself to being slower than your partner's X5 35i. BMW's times aren't that far out.

Thanks for responses guys.
Must say, I test drove the 325 vert and 125 vert back to back - can't say the 125 felt sluggish at all - did u put it on sport mode? It's ok though - I'm resigned to coming in 2nd best now... My wife has the lead foot anyway - she has lost way more points off her license than I have!! PS von Beige - I agree - most fun i ever had was in an MX5 many many years ago - and the 0-100 then was almost 10 secs!! but it FELT great!! cheers |

I CARE about my 0-100 times every time I push the magic start button..having the roof down to enjoy the wind, sunshine and scenery is just an added bonus for me.. And hoping to bring down the 0-100 times in the near future with some mods.. |
