Lost Key

Any ideas on how to get an extra key out of BMW without paying $200+?? I recently lost my key and need a spare. Is this covered under warranty? If not, any ideas on how to get an extra key without paying mucho dinero??

Thank you, thank you, thank you in advance

Hey, I lost me car. Can't remember where I parked it last night. Any way I can get another one out of BMW? Covered by warranty?

I keep all keys with a 'Lost Key' tag, in Canada supplied by charitable organizations like the War Amps, or TB Vets. It's a tag with a serial number and a PO Box address with postage guarantee. That way all anyone has to do is drop a set of lost keys in the mailbox, and you will get your keys back.

Here's how us NY'ers think...
Take your car in for service.
When you get it back, while there not looking, simply pocket the key.
Then dont leave, go back inside, and ask them where your key is?!
Tell them you have to go home now and get your extra key to move the car!
Leave angry and tell them you expect them to get you a replacement!

Its a sh*tty thing to do and I never told you to do it. But after my service dept. LOST my car for an extended period of time I would have no problem with it.
btw, yeah last time when I went to pick up car from service kept me waiting over 45 minutes.
They finally came over to me and explained they are having trouble locating my car! Took them over an hour to find it!!

My SA always hands the key to me, attached to the work order. Besides, they would have to code any new key to the VIN, and order the metal key insert to be coded to match. I hope not all New Yorkers are of the same mind. Sorry, but this plan is very risky, what if they have security cameras?

Just so happens that my boyfriend is as NYer too & he would totally do something like that. Great idea, told him, and we are definitely going to try this out next service.

P.S. You did just post this suggestion on a public forum so "I never told you to do it" might not fly, LOL

P.P.S. It is really bizarre that the dealer lost your car. I am guessing they just loved the car, took it to have lunch and flashed it around as their own!!

Do you think BMW isn't reading this right now, and sending emails to all of their dealers in Boston? At the best, you will be viewed as a loser, at the worst, charged with attempted fraud. Just accept responsibility and pay the $300, chalk it up to being careless. Next time don't lose your key, or if you have a habit of losing things - use id tags. Sorry, but this rates as one of the most ill-conceived plans ever.

Relax Lester - My post and I am sure Midgad's were both meant in good fun. No need for BMW to alert anybody. I am on my best behavior at every service, scouts honor!

Looks like a lot of people are jackin BMW keys. check ebay you might find your own key there being sold for $40. You just need to get it programmed at BMW. Ask to see how much it would cost for programming.

It won't work. Keys come pre-cut and programmed from BMW. Dealers cannot reprogram them.
