Good Deal on Michelin Pilot Super Sports? $500?
I can buy a set of 4 Michelin PSS tires for $500 with 6/32 tread left. Is this a good deal? How much tread do they have new? 3/32 is the point where I'd need to replace right?
MICHELIN PILOT SPORT 225/40/18 & 255/35/18 Thanks all |

I'd be surprised if all 4 tires were 6/32. Typically the rears would wear faster than the front. But say they are 6/32, you are probably more than halfway through the life of the tires, but they're asking more than half of the cost. I paid $950 for all 4 mounted and balanced. $500 for just the tires is too much. The most I'd pay is $250, since I would have to add to the cost mounting & balancing. My .02.

The PSS come with 10/32" new as per the specs. So, worn 4/32, and have 4/32 left till they are 100% worn at 2/32.
Brand new would be $822 for all four from Tirerack. All up to you. |

I would never* buy used tires. They are the single most important part of any car, no point at all in trying to make a value proposition out of them. But if you must, also remember the cost of mounting and balancing the tires, which you'll have to do sooner with half-worn tires.
*exception: slightly used (qualifying) R-comps from an extremely reputable vendor |

I traded my runflats to him for the PS2s. So I paid $150 (cost of shipping) for a set of tires with 1000 miles on them. Point is. Theres more than one exception. |

One tire being measured at one spot at 6/32" doesn't mean much. You need to have careful standards when you decide how worn a tire is. That's not a determination you should leave up to the seller or base off a single picture of a treadwear gauge.
Definitely be wary of buying used tires. I'm not saying it's always a bad idea, but it's not a great exercise for buyers who don't really know how to inspect a tire. I would never pay more than 50% of new price for a used tire, even if they only had a few thousand miles and were in excellent shape. $500 sounds steep even if they're in excellent shape with 6/32 measured in multiple spots IMO.
