I am Floridian by Birth but Bavarian by choice! Rosenheim has the StarkBeir fest coming up in March. My lederhosen are longing to be worn!

I'm doing my delivery today and made sure my trip was just long enough to catch the first day of Oktoberfest. I've asked our driver and the ladies at the hotel, but nobody can tell me how early we need to be at the tents on opening day to get in without a reservation. Can you give a couple of tourists some insider's advice for one day at Oktoberfest? Thanks!

Even going at 11am, the tents will be packed!!! Each day we are talking about 200K to 400K people. Its nuts.

Your best bet is to pay for a reserved table on the upper floor of one of the big beer tents. Maybe the hotel's concierge service can arrange this for you. You will typically pay 120 euros pp, for one beer and some basic food/snacks. But you get a bracelet - so you can come and go(from the beer tent) as you please.

I would recommend you just to go to Oktoberfest in the daylight/late afternoon. Forget about getting a beer there. Its too much of a Zoo. Stay until it gets dark outside(8pm-ish) eating food and looking around... then go back to downtown Munich for some good food and beer at the Augustiner or HofBrau Haus. It will be cheaper and far better experience.

On the opening day(that first Saturday) there is a nice parade thru Munich with everyone going to the Oktoberfest. You could also watch this parade as they make their way to the "tents". I think the parade is around 10am.

Have you seen my other thread on ED stuff in and around Munich. ?

Places to visit near Munich while on ED...

Thanks for the info, this gives us some flexibility. We'd like to try to get into a tent. We were planning on getting there before 11 am. Do you think 9:00 is early enough? Is it too early?

Yea... 9am-ish might work. Most of the big beer tents - open up around 10:30am and close down by 11:30pm at night. So I would think if you were down there before 10am you stand a good shot to get in. I bet there will still be plenty of people in line.

I think the best plan is to reserve a table. Some are listed at the second link bellow for as little as 30 euros pp. I would still ask your concierge(at your hotel) for help in getting a table/reservation at one of the big beer tents at the Fest.
