If you don't have a garage, well, I would reconsider buying any vehicle you can't afford to lose.

I think its the ideal situation for it to be garaged but not having a garage in parts of UK (some more than others) isn't a sign of lack of financial ability but just driven by the lack of space.

This is now picking up a lot more publicity, let's hope something comes out of it from BMW in some form of admittance to begin with, although that would be very unlikely.

I think, given its possible global financial scope BMW will resist till the last drop of blood in their veins before admitting the problem and start doing something about it. This is not really a 1M limited issue. This is about how easily accesible and how weakly designed their cars' safety&electronics architecture.

I would like to contribute in creating as big noise as possible though, no doubt about that.

It pisses me off that these guys can copy and program a key in 3 minutes, but my dealer wants $800 for a key and programming for my E92 335 with CA

I'm sure if we email BMW we will get brushed aside.

Asking these guys to go legit with their key making service is most likely the second topic on everyone's mind. First there is that matter of fucking die and go to hell!

What pissed me off is that they are by four and are just too damn calculated: who's not working on the car is waiting in the darker area or trying to blind the cameras, so freaking sure of their case. BMW has made it so easy it's probably not even thrilling anymore for them.

i think it already has. my dad said he saw it on the local news that the 1M could be stolen in under 3 mins. He was amazed.

In my experience, a procede piggyback tuner with CAN-clear enabled makes OBD-II coding impossible. I bet it would defeat adding a key as well. So for N54 owners, I guess that's also a security feature.

In the meantime, let's think of easy, creative solutions to make the car "undriveable" and/or at least discourage thieves to have a go at it.

Moving the OBD port, duct taping it, rewiring cables or pulling fuse #74 (http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...2&postcount=29) floated already as ideas to address the OBD abuse vulnerability of the 1M.

Other idea: if the driver seat is moved to its minimum position (i.e. closest position to the steering wheel) + the back rest part of that seat is subsequently inclined towards the steering wheel (as if you got to reach for the back seats), then there must be a way to connect the inclined driver seat and the steering wheel with a chain (for example an ABUS motorbike chain with nylon sleeve to avoid scratching: http://www.abus.de/us/main.asp?Scree...4003318522857m). If the inclined driver seat and steering wheel are connected, it will be mechanically impossible to drive the car, even with a running engine: impossible to sit, reach for the pedals and have a look through the windscreen at the same time. And forcefully moving the driver seat backwards will be to no avail, because locked to the steering wheel.

We got to check for possible ways of locking the minimum seat position by blocking the seat rails, locking the driver seat in inclined position, connecting the driver seat with the steering wheel, etc.

Anyways, those with BMW Performance Seats have the advantage of seat belt holes in the upper part which are big enough to slide a chain through.

Just another thought.

"Secret area"? It's not like these thieves can't find it again. I think you probably mean a "secure area", right? More importantly the OBD needs to be disabled until the actual key has authenticated.

When I had my wheels stolen from my 650i my cameras were flipped up. I didn't get to see the perps, but I was amazed how they bypassed alarm by cutting door and unlocking it.

At least u got to see the suspects...

The area the window is broken is the location I place the bar for the disklok, I gave it a try with the window down and the alarm active, I had to move the bar to get my hand down to the obd cover, in doing so the motion sensors picked up the disklok movement and the alarm activated.......Next I will be looking into man traps!

In the UK it is X5's top of the wanted list followed by 3 series M sport diesels and equivalent 5 and 1 series before M cars due to the smaller numbers around. Many are being stripped and sold on for parts as this generates less suspicion and there is a massive parts market making big money, so M cars are not worth the same in the parts game.

I cant help thinkng what difference a huge rabid looking Rottweiler would have.
Even chaining my car to the ground outside my house seems logical now.
Prevention aswell as the Cure is needed !!
