Oooops...my bad. Didn't realise this was that old. Guess I am late to the party.

My first reaction is to be appalled, but then I think back to my E90 M3 and the thing was so damn quiet that often times I couldn't feel/hear what RPM range I was in. I eventually got a DINAN exhaust that helped without having to announce to my entire neighborhood when I was arriving home! Ultimately, you can blame the tree-hugging crowd in Europe and even here in the US with the increasingly stringent noise restrictions. Besides. it's not like they are piping a Ferrari engine sound into the cabin of the M5.

My old GTI had a "noise pipe" that did the same thing...

So whose not a 'real' M car now?
Seriously, at the end of the day, if it make the experience more enjoyable for the driver, why not. Didn't the old Honda CRX have some sort of mechanical link between the engine and the firewall to help the driver 'feel' the power? |

I was sitting in the new 6 series with that awesome pop-up center speaker and I'm wondering if the same thing is in that car. Guess I have a reason to creep at the dealership today.

I don't think it's that big a deal.

BTW, I take my statement about the tree-huggers being at fault for the stringent noise ordinances. They are only partly to blame, I blame every import car with a 'fart-can' for an exhaust and every stupid soccer mom SUV with the obnoxiously loud exhaust that wakes me up at 8am on a Sunday! This is why manufacturers are having to produce quieter and quieter cars, and this is just one high tech approach to appease the enthusiasts.

All of those sound absolutely fantastic and the E63 and CLS63 are targeting the exact same customers as the M5. If someone just wants the looks, then they should buy a 528 with the M-sport package. However, most of the prospective M5 buyers want a high performance saloon that provides an exciting driving experience which includes the noise the thing makes. I know I would. |

Blah tree hugger, I meant if you really dont care for environment go live in one of worst polluted city in the world in China. Perhaps you will then get a better appreciation of people who care for the environment.

I am just waiting for the first tuning shop to announce a reflash that enhances the cars in-cabin siimulated noise. No need to but an aftermarket exhaust when you can get an aftermarket soundtrack! LOL

Better off as well since the driver is the only person who enjoys the soundtrack, otherwise can we say showoff and ostentatious? ;-)

I think there has been some banter about the idea of some manufacturers placing external noisemakers on electrics/hybrids, because we aren't accustomed to noiseless vehicles cruising about. But this...just takes the cake. I realise that FI setups will dampen the tone relative to NA, and I can live with that. It doesn't have to be wailing loud.

I travel with a CD of high performance engine and exhaust sounds and play it everytime I'm in a rental car.......I see nothing unusual here...
