Autocross and tire wear
I'd like to start taking my car to autocross events, but I'm trying to figure out how much I need to budget for tire wear. If I have a standard set of max performance street tires (something like a Ventus V12 or the like), what should I expect?
I know it varies based on many factors, but I'm just looking for a vague ballpark... I have no experience whatsoever. In case it matters, my tire sizes would probably be around 245 and 265. The car is a 135 with mods as listed in my sig.

I like the Michelin Pilot Super Sport or the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11's for track/street combo, but both are pricey about $1200 for the set. The PSS should fit without issue at 235/265 with the right offset wheel, but the RE-11's may need a spacer and camber in order to fit in those sizes. Best bet might be to look for tires in 225/255 to ensure fitment. |

I haven't chosen a specific tire set yet, and I know that the more expensive tires will be better... but if I buy something in that price range, I'll always be uncomfortable doing anything aggressive because I'll be thinking "well, I just burned about $30 worth of tire." I'm thinking that if I get a cheaper set, I can burn them freely without worrying too much about the cost. But again, the main question is how quickly I'll burn the tires if I spend time on the track. Based on that, I can figure out how much I need to spend.

Depends how much you over drive the car. I have 25 runs on my pss and they still look good and this on stock camber. If you are not smooth and over shoot corners it doesn't matter the tire or camber you will kill them fast.

Hmm... thanks for the advice. So is it reasonable to expect 40-50 runs out of a decent set of street tires?

Another option is the Hankook R-S3 won't last as long as the pss but a bit cheaper.
bimmer Don is right smooth is key to longevity. I plowed through the corners of my first few autox events and destroyed the outside edges of the fronts. Live and learn, but on the big track they are really good and I didn't have any issues. |

A tire usually last me 10 days. 10 autocrosses with 11 laps. Or 10 track days at around 100 miles. Or, 5 and 5, etc. At the end of that 10th day, the tire is basically treadless. My experiences do not account for the typical front-outside shoulder wear experienced by drivers on the steep part of the learning curve.

For performance driving the worst wear areas of the tires are the outside edge on the front tires. With camber plates, you can even the wear out by forcing it to drive on the inside edge most of the time and not roll as hard onto the outer edge.
The rule for autox: - If you can see cords, stop and replace the tires. Once you autox a few times, you'll be able to tell when your tires are no longer holding any grip. Usually you'll end up replacing tires before you need to because you just want to get grippier tires. |

Had Direzzas this summer, got 17000km of road use, and 100ish Auto X runs with a couple of the being show off drift runs and at the end of the fall they were all still above the wear bars across the tread blocks.

You need to raise tire pressure to avoid driving on the sidewalls. I run 40psi on stock tires. I tested with white marker on the triangles at the intersection of the tread and sidewall. I dont get to drive in enough autocrosses to worry about tire wear.

I'm sure they're great, but I'd like to start with something a bit cheaper so that I can drive them hard without constantly worrying about wearing them down. Maybe if I start getting into serious autox, I might consider dropping the money for some higher-end tires.

Like it was said before. It will all depend on how you drive. I get about 10-12 auto-x events out of tires. I need fresh rubber every season. I took wife's brand new passat with all season tires to one of the events and I've managed to shave more than 1/2 of usable tread on the front tires in just 6 runs. |

I am going to try out these federal 595 RS-R tires this spring. I do a mix of street/track/autox. For the price these really cant be beat at under $600 for a set. 140 treadwear rating and they have some pretty good reviews. Anyone else have experience with these? |
