Jet Black - What to do?

Hello,

I'm gonna get my Jet Black BMW 325i soon and reading this forum I started getting scared about all the care I need to take for this color . What do you guys suggest to as products (Zaino, etc.), towels to clean it properly w/o scratching it, etc?

Is it true that Jet Black scratches much more easily? Anything I can do to avoid that?

Also... will I have to handwash it all the times or is it safe to use also regular car wash?

Last question... any idea how much is gonna cost me to have the exterior detailing done by some detailing shop?

thanks!

as for a quick detailer and a black car... "eagle one...wet" works the best imo. be sure to use a micro fiber towel at all times.

never wash a black car with a hot paint surface or dry the car in the direct sun... this will equal ugly swirl marks.

Andrew 330i,

can you explain why drying the car in the hot sun would create swirl marks vs. drying the car in the shade?

Thanks

heat make your paint more vulnerable to anything.. I hate the cali sun plus i live wheres thers alot of wind so my car collects dust like crazy and i cant touch it or it will scratch the car! so I always just rinse it off with water and always use the ABSORBER things..leave your car in the sun for even an hour and put the bottom of your wrist on your car and youll see how hot it gets...

I don't think it's really a matter of Jet Black scratching any easier than other colors as much as that color shows them more. Drying a car in direct sun has 2 factors. The clearcoat is somewhat softer when it's hotter making it more vulnerable to friction and dried water spots are loaded with minerals like calcium, phosphates etc. that become fine "grit". Try to blot dry if you must dry in the sun and do it quickly. If you can keep away from "friction" passes with your drying towel the better off you are. Just my experience anyway.

wax or zaino or any product will not protect it from scratching. Some people on this board think ZAINO is a magical product of some sort.

JET BLACK INSTRUCTIONS
2 Bucket method
High Quality Sheepskin mit
www.pakshak.com for your mf's ULTRA PLUSH and WW are great
If garaged or will be cleaning it often= Clearkote Red Moose Glaze followed by 4 star UPP topped with Pinnacle Souveran Paste Wax.
If left outside and will not get cleaned or waxed often then = Zaino
Poorboys Spray and Wipe, Spray and Gloss and Super Slick & Suds Car Wash
Porter Cable 7424
Either Lake country, Excel or meguirs pads
Polishes I cant recommend I like to many of them. Look into Poorboys, Menzerna, Optimum. My go to polish my my jet black is the Menzerna CeramiClear PO106FF Polish but its not cheap!!!!!
You will need some Clay to, any major brand will work. Griots Clay sucks though dont buy it from there.

Yep! First time I washed my car, I was super excited, thinking that I was starting with a clean palette. I leaned in to look at my paint and noticed all these swirl marks. I'd forgotten that the dealership had "detailed" my car before delivering it to me. Doh!

I have found it to be much better when I wash my Jet black E90 around 630-7 pm, when the sun is setting and waxing it as soon as i finish washing with Meguiars NXT. It works really well and the swirl marks seem less apparent afterwards.

This is my second jet black BMW, and yes the paint DOES get VERY hot in the sun, but I also learned that if I wanted to see if my cleaning / polishing technique was scratching the clear coat, the best way to do so was close observation in full sunlight. as such, I immediatly discarded the applicator pad that came with the zaino kit I purchased. I've been very happy with the premium quality micro-fiber cloths that are available, one has now become my new applicator pad. no more cotton for me (on the exterior anyway)

Yes...I also have Jet Black on my BMW 328i. The color is a total bitch to keep clean!...but...when she IS clean, there is no finish like the mirrored reflection of Jet black!

My suggestion with Jet Black is to lower your standards. I became detail obsessed with my Jet Black e46 M3, and it was one hell of a lot of work. It just never ends. The answer for me: TiAg 550 followed by a Ti/Ag 335.

From my previous Jet Black 325 (2001 or 2002), I would HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend getting Kit Wash and Wax. When I used that stuff on the jet black it was as if I had purchased a new car... heres the trick: Don't pure the stuff into a bucket... pure it directly onto your wash mitt after each section. Be thorough, go over the section multiple times to even out the product well, rinse your glove and continue with the next section. After owning my previous for six years, NOTHING brought out the delicious shine quite like this technique!
