Well regarded auto journalist Chris Harris from EVO Magzine reviews the BMW 1M vs Cayman R. What does he have to say about the 1M?
Quote:
In short, the 1M is a much more usable car. It debunks the "it's not a proper M car" myths. M cars are not about engines, they are about chassis. The chassis is pure M car. The car doesn't suffer from turbo lag and doesn't get much more fun. For the money, it has to be one of the best fun cars you can buy.

Does it feel like an M engine? No it doesn't, but it provides massive usable everyday performance. This car in the real world is as quick, if not quicker, than the E92 M3. An absolutely cracking car.

Get the "iSwifter" browser app. It's flash friendly and it's what I just used on my iPad to watch this video.

It feels just as fast, if not faster then the E92 M3
That statement always brings a BIG to my face.
M3 fans probably hate it but there you have it.

I personally couldnt justify another 11K for the porsche if i can pick up a second hand 997 turbo for the similar money.

In the end he weaseled out of a definitive stand on 1M vs. Cayman R. Said a lot of good characteristics on both cars but did not say which one he will take home. How is it a CR vs 1M? There was no comparison between the two.... 1M chassis is proper M chassis but how does it stack up against CR. How does the 1M engine with turbo boost run against CR's NA boxer 6.

Never. The V8 in the M3 is a glorious engineering masterpiece. The 7-speed DCT is ingenious. The glory that comes with the M3 badge is all there in the E92. I wouldn't give it up for a 1M any day, even if they gave it to me instead.

Agreed all the way up until DCT. DCT is for the lazy.

I want the complete package.

When BMW makes it a full M car, I will buy it.

I'm pretty sure EVO wants you to buy the magazine. That's why Chris doesn't really give a favourite.
Also, in Chris defence, making a decision of which car is better would be tough. I think for most people in this market it comes down to money. Is the Cayman better performance, yes. Is the BMW more usable, but just as fun, yes.
Rather than deciding on a favourite, we should be proud that both BMW and Porsche built these cars. Cars that average people could actually afford, that rival the big dogs like the M3 and 911.

Hold on there. You have to remember that this 1M is the "new" direction BMW and ///M want to go with their ///M cars. Back to their old roots.
The other thing is that the next gen M3 will be even more powerful then the current version. I own a E46 and i look at it like we are ALL family. Not, one sibling better than the other. ///M will always be making a better car than previous Gen's. Thats the way it is and will always be...
