The 335 is a regular 3 series (non M). As such it can be a great mix of luxury and sport coupe for the money. The other cars are more bare bones sports cars for the money. A well equipped e92 335 (which is what would bring the price up to 50k) is a more refined sports experience and everyday driver. I wouldn’t want to drive a Boxter or Lotus everyday. |

It's what you define a "better" car as. For some, (who drive this 50K car in question solely on the weekend, track, and autocross), performace is more important. For others (myself included) who drive this on a daily basis, "better" is a well-performing luxury car. There are people who want a 50K for the weekends and track who do not care about the everyday driveability and useability of the 3 series that the rest of us demand. Bare sport is what these people want. It all depends on what you want in this car, and what you want the car for.
If you are looking for a pure sports car, for 50K, there are cars out there which will out-perform the e92 335.

I just don't see a lot of people "cross shopping" the 335i with the Corvette/Cayman, etc. |

In my view, BMW will have no problem selling the 335i coupe - the problem will be world wide supply to meet the demand.

I think if refinment and fit and finish are at all important to you, the only competition is the G35, IS350, and the Audi S4. The S4 is of course a 4 door but it has very handsome Teutonic styling and an interior that's spot on. BTW, I love B.C. Will be road tripping up there on the 24th of June. Also, I made the trip from B.C. to Portland in about 5 hours (including the border cross) in my M5 in April. |

Shouldn't the Evo or the STI be considered for well below 50k as well? Obviously these would be for zero luxury and performance only.
Personally I think 50k is a tad too much for a non-M.

[QUOTE=KC Bimmer]For 50k, I'd keep the same choice I made last Sept. Buy an E90 and pocket the remaining 10k![/QUOTE
What he said and pocket the extra $6,340. I'm very happy with my car.

Im never going to spend upwards of 40k on a 3 series.....
If i'm going to spend at least 50k i'll throw in 6 grand more and get myself: in that exact color or: both cars are gorgeous and well worth their $$$ imo

I agree, however, they don't have the practicality and many of the luxury amenities that the e92 offers. I mean, yeah it is an option but having 4 seats is important to a lot of people. However, if you have the e92 as a second car and a more practical car as your primary, then it's a different story.

I hope that's not the 3000 blue, because those are for sure the 3000 wheels don't get me wrong, I want a Cayman S too, badly, but to option that car to the level I want it would mean a 65-68 grand sticker price |

It's hard to compare cars like the Lotus Elise and Cayman S to a 335i. I personally think the 335i will be worth every penny, not only from a performance standpoint but from a *life* stadpoint. It's a roomy 2+2 that will be sporty, but not stiff or harsh, it'll have a trunk, the tranny will be aggressive, but not notchy or unforgiving, it'll have a nice plush interior while remaining "young and hip", whatever that means. Sure, if you don't have kids, or don't haul anything ever, grab a Lotus, or a Cayman S, or a 'vette, all great cars; but sometimes practically rears it's ugly head and compromises have to be made. For me, I need to carry around a pretty sizable amount of stuff each day, so I need a real trunk; that means cars like the Elise, Cayman S, vette etc.. are out. We're a one car family, so the 335i's of the world are a great choice.

I think for a good mix of BOTH performance sport car, as well as luxury, for the 50k level, the closest competitor to the E92 335i would be the Infiniti M45 Sport. Personally I really don't want a sedan, but if I did, I would give the M45 a serious look. 2nd place competitor for performance and luxury combo for 50k is the Audi S4. After that, who knows. Maybe a C55 AMG? That would likely go 4-8k over though. Anyway, my suggestions were based on both a strong combo of performance AND luxury. If you wanted something heavily on one side or heavily on the other side for 50k, there are probably other options. |
