Newby assistance with rotors purchase - 125i

Happy Wednesday all,

Had my QLD roadworthy done this morning for rego changeover from ACT. Passed as expected, but the mechanic mentioned this:

- Rotors (front and back) bordering on legal limit and need replacing soon
- Replace the brake pads at the same time as the wear on the pads if used with new rotors could cause some vibration and more squeaking.

I know BMW recommends pads and rotors get replaced at the same time, however idrive is telling me my pads have >40k left before a change is required. So i'm thinking the previous owner just did a brake pad replacement but didnt do the rotors

Long story short I need new rotors and pads if im going to do it properly. So basically:
- Wheres the best place for me to source these?
- Car doesn't many km's, only a weekender really so I don't need performance rotors/pads or anything like that.
- Will I need to also get a new front sensor and rear sensor (I believe there is only 2 sensors not 4)

I will be looking to buy the parts and take them to Mike Webber Prestige and Performance in Brisbane for the install.

Just ask Mike,

he mentioned a pad and rotor combo for me to grab before the next service (track day in June) so getting new kit then and a fresh bleed... Only done 30k in my car but the squeal is killing me... 2 days after every clean and she will squeal again. Apparently common for the 135... Once they develop a lip on the rotor they will just keep squealing

I have forgotten what it is and it might be different for a 135/125... But I remember at the time they were cheapest and easiest from bmrautowerkes...

Spoke to Mike or maybe Will (cant recall) today and he quoted roughly $1k for 135i rotors/pads/sensors installed. He didnt have 125i prices off the top of his head so I sent him my VIN and he's going to get back to me.

I actually got some setup prices from RDA this morning, but Mike/Will mentioned the rotors and pads may be a touch hard for the beemer. Will report back once I get quotes.

well by bordering on legal limit he meant we will pass your brakes because you are doing a rego change over, however if it was for sale you would need to change them.

You shouldn't need new sensors if they say you still have 40,000kms left.

Whether you need to change the brake pads should depend on whether they have uneven wear. If they have they much pad left on them I would change only the rotors and maybe get the pads shaved if they're a little uneven.

On my E88 135i I had the pads changed at about 60,000kms and I still have around 25,000 left on this second set of pads. Haven't changed the rotors yet. How many kms on your car? I believe that BMW recommends changing the rotors every second pad change.

ive got close to 60k on the car atm. Ill have a word to mike/will about possibly just doing the rotors with a pad shave and see what his thoughts are. thanks for the advice

- I would change pads at the same time
- iDrive calculates brake pad life based on fuel consumption, not very accurate, therefore highly likely your pads have less, or more than 40,000km of life
- The sensors are 'activated' when the pad life wears down and the sensors touch the rotors. If it hasn't done this yet, you dont need new sensors, you can just reset the life of them in iDrive or through the MF stalk. Correct in that there is only one sensor per axle
- Being a weekender is irrelevant to whether you need performance pads or brakes.

Ok so I just got the following quote from mike webber prestige and performance. How does it sound, is this about right?

"Hi Ashley,
The prices are as follows: Front pads, rotors and sensor $500 fitted. Rear pads, rotors and sensor $475 fitted. The rear price is higher than expected because the rotors are quite big(300mm)"

Grand total $975.

Update: Bmw fortitude valley quoted me roughly $1200 for the same which included a pricing special on brakes for the month of june.

Update: Dropped the vehicle off at Mike webber this morning for the rotor/pad/sensor work and all was good. Got a call from Will a minute ago and he told me the pads have heaps of meat on them and the rotors have about a years worth of wear left!!!

I was embarrassed to say the least, during roadworthy as mentioned in my original post I was Informed rotors were on/below legal level and needed changing. I will name and shame "Tony Curries" in Morningside as the culprits for this misinformation. I will be paying them a visit.

I had Will at Mike Webber source the parts for my car based on this info. I apologised as much as possible over the phone and said I will pay for the parts and keep them at home so they are not out of pocket so they can use them on my car when the time comes. Ill also be dropping off a carton to them as thanks for being super honest.

Really really impressed with them at the moment. Saved me a bundle of cash.

Mine will be in soon the squeal is killing me... But same issue still plenty of life it just sounds like I am driving round in my granddads kings wood...

Should have just swapped the pads for a sports exhaust...

I replaced the front brake pads, rotor and sensors using original OEM parts for my E70 X5 late last year for all under $300 fitted.

That sounds a bit too cheap for pads, rotors, sensors and labour, plus being OEM.
In general you wouldn't be able to get parts for a commodore that cheap.

Made my way to Mike Webber P&P after work to pick up the car and parts. Just paid for the parts which in total came to $670 for:

- Textar front & rear pads
- Textar front discs
- ATE rear discs
- Front & rear brake sensors

These are now stored away making a new home in the cupboard until they are needed

I ordered the parts online and got them fitted at Eastcoast Suspension at Taren Point. They specialise in racing cars - Porsche and Ferrari.
