Eventful Akuna Bay run...

So, tonight seemed to be an eventful (if incomplete) Akuna Bay run.

Started at the bottom, working our way past the West Head turnoff, down into the marina and then back up to the top gate.

It felt really good tonight, the car felt a lot better (the tyres were down to around 215 front, 230 rear so i got them up before the run). Yes, they were warm when I checked them!

So Christine felt great, she was loving it. I was really gapping my run partner (Mazda SP 23). Don't know what it was, but she was really flowing.

I had about 45 seconds on him by the time we got to the marina, so i waited down there. We cruised through the marina and then opened up coming up the hill. Flowed through the 4 or 5 twists right after and suddenly I saw stationary white lights ahead. So i slowed right down, put on hazards and stopped. I then realised it was 4 bikes with their headlights on a fallen tree and then i spotted a Ducati lying on the ground in the fallen tree!!!

The tree blocked the whole road, and one of the guys came over and couldn't stop laughing. The lead biker had gone straight into the tree and (somehow?) came out unscathed. They were "knees on the road" coming through there - so it would've given him a heart attack seeing it in his headlight!!!

But then the weirdest thing happened... A 4WD came up behind us (from the marina side) about 5 mins later as we were clearing a path for the crotch rockets. It was an unmarked rodeo with 2 cops in full dark blues! They looked at the tree blocking the whole road, made a call, said to me and my mate "i know you're having fun, just be safe" and U-turned and drove off.

What I learned:

1. I would've wiped out on the tree if the bikes didn't run a few mins before us (we didn't know they had even gone on the run)
2. The water police @ Akuna Bay (?) or Church Point (?) must follow at night if they hear cars/bikes burning through, and make sure they are safe and nobody wipes out (as there is no mobile reception on the run).
3. While I only do the run at night so as to limit the risk to other drivers and myself incase anything untoward happens, i'm going to step the runs down a couple of notches. It could have so easily ended badly for Christine and myself, not to mention my mate driving behind if he was in front.

It was so strange - the cops clearly wanted to make sure we were OK and then pissed off!?

Anyway, i'll post photos tomorrow! There's also a video i have of one of the Ducati's trying to get through the tree debris!

Out,

Alex

Wow, big tree. Has it been windy there?

Not particularly.. My assumptions would be that all the rain we've had in the past few weeks has removed the top soil and made the roots unstable, perhaps even moved the rocks that the tree was on.

It has only been max. 20 knots breeze in the last few weeks, and only a couple of times.

That's always the risk in 'having fun' on public roads... they're uncontrolled conditions. Anything can happen.

I would go to say that any road, public or private, are in uncontrolled conditions.

That's why anything can happen at any time!

I'd argue that you wouldn't be driving with the same vigour as a daily commute on that trip.

I'd count a closed 'hot' track as a controlled environment.

Well that's for sure - i certainly don't drive like that on the way to work

It depends as what you define as 'controlled'; as there's only so much that can be controlled..

But hey, it's a moot point! I'm just glad i wasn't the one to discover the tree first...

Yesterday we had several instances of 40 knot gusts on the water, week prior 30 knot gusts as well. Akuna bay can act as a funnel with it in the right direction.

Add in some rain & unstable hilly terrain and trees falling over is not unlikely.
