Depends on how you drive too. It used to take about 12 mins for me but when i moved houses it only takes about 7-8 due to the speed limit on the road I take is higher.

Yeah the sump/oil volume is pretty large, so takes a while.
A good 7-8 minutes for me, which is also the protracted time it takes for the Procede to completely kick in.

Tell me if I'm wrong here (it's happened once before), but doesn't the 125 have a water temp gauge & the 135 an oil temp gauge? Having both readouts on my steering wheel I can see that the oil takes much longer to heat up than the water.

The gauge on the 135i is oil temp not water temp. It always takes oil a lot longer to warm up and stabilise than it does water.

Most cars use water temp as the primary temperature gauge which is why it appears that the 135i takes a long time to warm up in comparison.
I think you'd find that the water comes up to temp very quickly on the 135i as it is highly optimised for clean emissions which requires the engine to get up to temp very quickly.

Personally, I'm considering getting a ScanGauge so I can actually monitor water temp etc.

The P3 boost gauge has a water temp readout amongst other things if you want something that sits flush in your dash and looks OEM.

I'm normally at work before mine has warmed up. Sometimes if I'm lucky I get to spurt down the strech just before the business park i work in.

I take backstreets though from my place - takes about 10-15 to get to work

The most I would do on a cold start is wait till it idles. Surely it is fine otherwise BMW would tell you to not drive it for 10-15 mins until the needle moves

That is total BS! Just start it up and drive it for God's sake!

Cars are designed to be driven from cold - just don't give it a pizzling till the oil temp gauge starts to move.
The DME restricts full engine performance until it has reached a certain temperature threshold anyhow so I don't think you need to worry about it. Sitting there letting the engine idle until it warms up simply wastes fuel and contributes to emissions.

I think they mean "driven" as in don't race your car when is cold, wait for it to warm up... ?

Fully agree with Crusty. Just don't give her the berries until the needle's moved.

That is ridiculous. Get in, drive away.

Standard car, do what you like, it's designed for idiots and will take the punishment just about anyone can give it.
Modified car, have some mechanical sympathy, let it get to operating temps before you start opening it up. Along with more regular oil changes.
