Fitment question (yes, I've searched. . .
. . .but I haven't found a direct answer to my question.)
Hello, everyone-- I have an '11 135i with Sport Package and BMW Performance Suspension. I'd like to replace the stock wheels/tires with Michelin PSS (225/40/18 front and 255/35/18 back) on VMR V710 wheels. Can anyone tell me definitively (ideally from first-hand experience) whether or not I'll experience rubbing? I'd rather not roll the fenders if I could avoid it. Also, if you know that this setup will rub, can you suggest any alternative, comparable wheels and tires, or any solutions other than fender-rolling? Thanks in advance! CK PS: Gill at Tire Rack wasn't able to give me a definitive answer and suggested I contact VMR. Haven't heard back from them, so I thought I'd bring it to the forum. |

When I got my car it had the 710's on it, 225/40 front and 245/40 rear, and they didn't rub. Can't say about the 255's on the rear.
I went to the Arc-8 wheels, Liked the looks and the offsets better. In retrospect it was a very small change and the 710's really do look good, if I did it again I wouldn't. If you have stock though, I would check them (Arc-8's) out. If you haven't already. I have 265mm on my rears right now, and I wouldn't doubt there's room for more. I have the stock 2011 suspension, your PS setup could differ here as I'm sure you know. |

Thanks, tracer bullet--
Yes, I have looked at the Arc-8 wheels, and they're sort of a Plan B in terms of my aesthetic preference--I agree with what you've written. You also raise a point that others may be able to give me some guidance on: if I went with 245 tires in back, would there be any noticeable performance penalty--if this is minimal, I'd be willing to trade it for assurance that there would be no rubbing on V710 wheels. Hi--I don't plan to drop the car any further than the Performance Suspension already has. Would going to 245 tires in the rear help? Again, if the performance hit isn't significant I'd be willing to do this.
Also, Everfly, I didn't understand the link--can you clarify how it relates to my question? Thanks. CK |

One thing that would slightly help is also mentioning what offset you plan to purchase. I'm guessing you are planning 18x8.5 et45fr, 18.9.5 et50r? That's what I'd do anyways. I think it will fit as you listed but I'd go ahead and order 245/35 rears for your first set just to be safe if those tires come in that size. If not, I'd order 255/35 before I ordered 245/40. Also, you should be able to get a little rear camber added if you do rub a little and you don't want to roll.
If you do rub a little it will be mainly be with extra weight such as passengers in the car.

Charles, what did you end up getting?
I plan on getting 18x8.5 ET45 for the front, but conflicted between 18x9.5 ET45 vs ET 50 for the rear. The wheels I am getting are also VMR710. I was told if getting the ET45 for the rear, to match it with 245 tires, and if getting ET50, to match it with 255 tires. My question is, I plan on keeping the suspension stock (sport package) but would like to minimize the wheel gap. Which setup would be more ideal? Other suggestions? Thanks. |

I'm running VMR701s 18x8.5/45 and 18x9.5/50 with a PSS 225/255 setup. At stock height I got no rubbing at all. I just installed a Dinan Stage I suspension which dropped the car maybe 3/4". I'm now rubbing on 3 corners when I hit dips at speed. I have an alignment scheduled in a few days, so we'll see if that takes care of any of the rubbing. If not, then I'll do a roll. The rubbing isn't that bad, but I'm going to get it perfect. A few things to consider - Michelin PSS run wider and shoulders are squarer than other brands, so they will rub where other tires won't. On the other hand, the beefiness lends to the appearance of filling the fender well. As far as street tires go, they are the best you can buy. Bridgestone S04s will give a little more room, and are also outstanding street tires. These were my very close second choice. As far as offsets go, I would not get ET45s for the rear. ET50s sit pretty much flush, and that 5mm makes a huge difference getting the tire to tuck in under the fender like it should when you hit a bump. ET45s will extend out another 5mm, so a little outside of flush. Running 245s on a 9.5" wide rim would not be ideal at all .. for looks or handling. Also note that 245s are about 1/4" shorter than 255s, as well as the 225 fronts. If you're going to go with 245s for the rear, I'd stick to 215s on the front. Here's some pictures I just took of my setup (crappy ugly day today so the pictures aren't the best) - Last edited by TheBreeze; 10-07-2012 at 10:15 AM.. |

I'd definitely get the et50 rear. A 255 tire is still a little stretched on a 9.5inch wide wheel. Even with the et50 you may rub a little with weight in the car depending on the tire brand you choose.

Thanks the breeze. Your setup looks great. Do you have any pictures of your car before lowering? I plan to use the stock springs, so was wondering if that still leaves a big wheel gap with the same size wheels and tires as your setup.
