New Member - BSM vs VO
Hello all - great forum and tons of valuable insight on all things 1M so kudos to everyone for posting!
I have my eye set on a 1M being my next "fun car" and wanted to get feedback on color from some 1M owners. I grew up in a black car family and although I fell in love with the Silver Grey Metallic on my E86 M over time, historically black always wins out as the color of choice - it's timeless. So for those VO drivers - did you have any initial thoughts that it's a bit too flashy and did it take time for the color to grow on you too? Any comments from BSM guys who were in the same situation are also appreciated. Of course I could hold out for a BSM 1M with low mileage to come on the market but there are already a few nice CPO VO cars out there waiting for a caring new owner - hence my dilemma. Cheers and look forward to hearing your feedback. |

I'm far from the norm but BSM looks the best to me and is the rarest color. I live in California where it's warm so didn't go for it but it looks great. VO looks great too but in some light it doesn't but it's the classic color. Both have pluses!

Hey jp! Welcome! And hope you find a car!
As far as colors, I initially only wanted alpine. I had seen VO in person and thought it was too much to deal with day to day. Now that I have mine in white I honestly wouldn't mind the VO, especially since it's the signature color for the car. I do like, however how any black highlights really well on the Alpine. I haven't seen a BSM 1M in person but I bet it's pretty awesome. However I don't think my ocd would allow me to have a black car...too hard to keep clean!

Hi JP,
My 2 cents: There's no better color than BSM if you don't mind keeping it always clean. There's no better color than VO if you don't mind the attention and if your local climate is mostly sunny. In the evening and overcast, i still find VO hard to get used to. If you're a ///M freak, there's no better color then AW (after applying the M stripes). Good luck finding yours, and do join us in Belgium once we manage to organize ourselves next time. |

i have mostly driven black or dark colours prior to the 1M.
but for me the 1M is all about Valencia Orange. don't get me wrong....i love the Black 1M.......but for me this car was born to be Orange! White is more of the 'universal' colour and it looks good on the 1M but i'm just not a white-car kinda guy. yes you will get a lot of attention....but you only live once. go for it! |

I'm a "color" person who felt black and white too bland, especially in Europe where it seemed 80% of the cars seem to be Blk, Wht or Silver....when I saw my car for the first time inside a BMW warehouse, it was the only car out of hundreds that was different and bold. I would have 1000% gotten blue but wasn't available so opted for VO.
I love it everyday so am glad I got VO. Plus as someone said, it's the iconic color on all the magazine covers... And in this photo is dirty and it still looks great ;-)

You can get black and white on any car. VO is the 1M and the 1M is VO. Just like how the estoril blue is to the e36 M3's back in the day.
I like how they use to have colors just for M cars. Don't like how they are playing out this estoril blue 2 on almost everything. |

I choose black for myself as I see it as a timeless and classic shade. It looks magnificent when washed. I live in Northern California so it never gets too hot. I knew it was the only color I could get of the three as I only prefer grey or black cars...I tend to get sick of colors after a couple years but never tire of black or grey. I think it's amazing. It's funny, My neighbor 4 houses down has the opposite issue and he only buys white cars. He has three white BMW's. I feel like the black SPY from MAD Magazine every time I drive by.

Thanks a lot guys - really appreciate the feedback. Up and until Saturday I was dead set on a BSM car but slowly VO is winning me over, and the daily driver article didn't hurt either (as I intend for this car to spend more time on the road than in the garage)!
eeghie No doubt - please keep me posted when your next meet up is. Shroom My girlfriend is originally from NorCal on the way up to Tahoe - so maybe day after I move back (and bring the car and gal with me) you'll see another 1M in the neighbourhood. Gorgeous part of the country up there. Now back to the King's Day celebrations....... |
