135 vs STi
Has anyone went up against an STi in their 135? I was driving today and passed one and didn't really know what they had as far a numbers and wanted to see how the 1er would fair against it.

Stock for stock, they're very close. The 1er is a tad quicker in a straight line, but the STi handles a little better because of it's super-sticky factory tires.
Upgrade the tires on the 1er and it'll hang with, if not beat, the STi around a track. But the STi is AWD so it's no fun at all (see my sig  ) |

I came from a VW Jetta J-Sud, youll get used to the RWD..I loved not having to worry bout speed on curves in my VW but now we can drift! But im used to the RWD, I drive 2 RWD cars daily...

Greatest DRIFT video ever!!!
I test drove a new '09 STI... DEFINITELY felt slower than my 135i Step. It has a cheap interior, but it's still a nice car (and probably better for the track after mods).
For example... check out this STI... http://video.kenblockracing.com/flash/small_player/preloader.swf?vendor_id=204&media_i d=9183&bgcolor=FFFFFF&autoplay=0 |

A good friend of mine owns and 08 and we have raced from a 30 roll to 100.
The 135i is faster stock for stock between these two specific cars. He has upgraded to a 93 oct Cobb tune, and w/SSTT it's again the 135i. The higher the speeds the more advantage the 135i had. |

I will agree, I own an 08 STI and am looking to get another car or possibly replace the STI with the 135i. The 135i definately has the speed up top. Stock for Stock from a dig the cars will be neck and neck with the STI just slightly up front for the first 80-100mph and then the 135i will own.
Around the track its a toss up. There have been some articles like C&Ds shootout that have the STI being very slow. C&D is hardly a magazine you should take to heart. A problem with STI magazine times is the fact that to get the most out of them you have to drive them differently than you would any other car around the track. I think a lot of test drivers do not realize this and just scream understeer! Mod for Mod the 135i is going to respond a little better. Stage 1 (just tune) STI you are looking around 270whp and 300wtq, Stage 2 (DP and Tune) STI you are looking around 300awhp and 350lbtq somewhere in that range. The awd will always have the advantage from a dig and the 135i will always have the advantage from a roll. Both are very solid cars! Comments on interior quality, the plastic in the 08 STI is a step up from previous years but it still feels like an economy car. The seats are alright but the driving feel is great and the car is nimble for its weight. The interior quality in the BMW is better, I don't think that is in question I would probably lean towards the STI in terms of reliability though. and the 6spd is pretty much indestructible. There are STI's running 500whp on the stock transmission with no issues. |

I would think the STI is more of a track monster and is beastly with intensive mods. If youre not going to be above 500whp, the 135i will suffice but I have yet to see any real super beasts on the N54 platform (although I don't really look, so there may very well be some). I always hear about 500+whp subarus though :eyebulge: That said, I love my 135i and it is the perfect car for me.
btw, that video was like :eyebulge: but more like :eyebulge::eyebulge::eyebulge:. Couldn't help but smile through it

Yeah, my STi was quick, but I'm fairly sure my 135 is quicker in a straight line. It was also awesome in the winter. There were some beastly STi's, but that was after a good amount of engine work (aka, turbo swap, possible internal upgrades) They were pretty damn reliable with an exhaust and tune though.

My STI limited was (stock) slower than my 135i .... although it was more manageable since it forgives more mistakes. On the other hand .... I was running 375whp so i'm used to something faster ... but i haven't started on the 135 yet
FYI: one of my friends in the subaru community has a limited like I had running 624WHP (on race gas) and 568WHP on pump! |

The one thing I do like about the STI is that you can throw a Turbo, Turboback, FMIC, Headers, Tune and other supporting mods at it and it will still be very reliable power at 370+awhp. I have not seen enough 1-series owners and 3-series owners at these power levels around 400rwhp for very long periods of time.
I am sure they exist but I want to see what the long term says for these cars. |

AutoX Suggestions?
Hey guys, I'm a new 135 owner and new to the site and I'm looking for suggestions.
First, I don't know about track differnces but my 04 STi was a blast AutoXing. I raced about a season and a half (Mid-Atl Subaru Challenge winner 07). I think stock, the 135 is way stiffer, pulls way harder and doesn't seem to stop pulling! My STi had better steering response by far. It's really hard to compare the "fun factor" because these cars are completely different and design to be.... It's going to be very interesting AutoXing this year. Can't wait to try the "1"! Last year I raced in BSP with very little mods to my STi, R-comp (255/45), larger wheels(Volk CE28N), F/R sway bars (Cobb), F-end links (Kart Boy). I'm looking for race wheels size, off-set, camber, tire and camber suggestions for AutoXing if anyone has input. Thanks! |

I have an 08 STI... it is fast as $hit on the track even on the stock tires, bone stock car.
Reliability at the track is a problem! I've blown an engine at 3000 miles and am getting a 135 next week!

Well, that all depends. Reliability at the track is also an issue with the 135i. I wouldn't track it without at least adding another oil cooler. The 08 STI (yes I own one) is plenty reliable on the track. There have not been THAT many reported track failures. No more than we have seen with previous model years. There were a couple things working against the 08 early on... bad factory tune causing lean condition at the limiter and the stop sale. |

Comments are based on track experience -- not real world road experience because I gave up betting with my license a long time ago.
I chose the 135I because I was looking for a nice daily driver with occasional track use when the 911 is down for weather or convenience. If I was going to get a more dedicated track coupe/sedan to track, I would select whatever the latest version of the Evo there is. I have driven them all on the track with the exception of the latest generation STI and Evo. The Evo has the closest to a throw-away interior and still be tolerable which makes it more perfect for a track car. Take-off the dirty, brake dust coated wheels -- brush them off and toss them into an available opening and there are many of them (openings). Don't do that with the 135 -- meticulously clean them and wrap them up in individual bags and get one in the trunk and carefully put three in the backseat through the ridiculously small space between the seat tilted forward and the door pillar. That is unless you got non-power seats and you don't have to wait five minutes for the seat to move all the way forward. The reason I said all that is, it depends on where you encounter the car. Most of the Evo's and the STI's I encounter at the track have been modified and use better tires. They definitely hold their own with whatever M3 I have seen. But; they are not encumbered by the skinny runflat front tires that are good for three maybe four laps of a 2-3 mile track. Then there are all kinds of reliable brake pad options. That said my 135I holds its own remarkably well on rft and stock brakes for at least four laps. I have never encountered the dreaded oil temperature problem. That might come up with better tires and some better brake pads. My observation is that the 135 does very well in the 80 to 135 range; but looses when it comes to braking and turning. Good tires and brake pads should solve that problem. If you start popping turbo mods on the 135 and track your car you are part of a beta test program and I have no idea where your reliability goes; but, you may be a good data point. If you are looking at drag racing only, then disregard everything I said, I have no point of reference.

if it is racing on the track, I'd say ditching the run crap will make the 135 at least as fast as the STi. On my first time AutoX class, I ran 0.5sec slower than my co-worker's STi. But when the instructor is driving, the time is neck to neck (~0.1 difference sometimes it's the 135, sometimes it's the STi).
I sat in my co-worker's STi and it's pretty crazy, coz he just power thru on ramp turns like it's going straight. But of coz, you won't be doing that on a track. What I'm saying is, it could be fun when you're driving it on the streets. I've JB3 map4 in, so my 135 definitely pulls much harder than the STi. Also I've ditched the run crap for some RE01R, with those tires and the JB3, I'm sure if the driver isn't a total Noob, should beat the STi, even if the STi has a stage 2 (tune + dp). |

I also depends what year is the STI. I owned a 06 STI and it's quicker around a lap the 08 version, especially due to the softer suspension in the new STI.
In straight line the 135i is faster (overall), but cornering, the 06 STI is much faster and stable (stock for stock I mean). With the 08 STI, it's probably still better at cornering, but not by that much. Both cars suffer from understeer, but the AWD system in the STI gives you more space for errors and can let you be more agressive if you know how to handle it. Of course if you throw somes mods in the game, every thing can change quickly... Overall I prefer my 135i, but the STI is a beast and I miss it a lot during winter (Canada...). |

Went up against a 2007 STi brand new a year ago. I'm stock. At 60, the Sti immediately go a half car jump. Stayed there for some time. Then as we hit higher mph, I pasted him pretty quickly. It appears his gearing was shorter, which accounted for his initial burst of speed. This was the old body style, which is definately quicker than the new STi.

The 135 keeps up very well stock for stock and probably tuned as well (just cheaper to upgrade an STI). This is assuming dry pavement of course, add rain or snow and well… The 135 has torque a lot earlier although a stage 1 OTS map improves the STI you are still looking at 3k or more before the punch hits.
I’d go with a RWD or a heavily biased RWD AWD car for the track, just seems more fun. |
