sell the 1er or not...?

Just looking for some advice here. I've benn thinking for a while about trading in my car. I've always wanted a jeep srt8 but got the 135 instead. And now that I owned it a year... It has already lost about $5000 in value. The jeep is a little more then the car but it seems to be holding the value much better. So what do you guys think?

1. As a dealer will not necessarily offer anywhere near blue book, how are you determining the trade in value?

2. While it may be a desirable toy or a useful tool, a BMW is not an asset unless it is a collectible such as a 507, Z8, etc.

3. If you enjoy your 135i, keep it, if not get rid of it - but the finances should have little to do with it, IMHO.

I drove a Jeep Wranlger for seven years. It ran fine, required a number of tweaks to the suspension to get it sorted. But it had preposterous fuel economy, no acceleration and poor (at best) brakes. I realize the SRT 8 is a big improvement, but it is no 135. Why not do the BMW factory ECU update to get 320bhp out of your car and do a few events like autocrosses with it? Don't worry about depreciation, every car drops in value these days, some a lot more than others. There is just no comparisson between even a BMW 116d and a Jeep in terms of noise levels, handling, safety, braking, etc.

The Jeep also does not come with a manual. Mine did, but I don't think you can spec an SRT8 that way. I test drove one for grins not long ago. It was quick, but the braking and handling left a lot to be desired.

Good luck whatever you decide. Definitely don't buy a Jeep without some extended test drives, and be prepared for a never ending series of upgrades!

If you like the jeep more and the cost to trade into it is affordable to you, get the jeep, but I'd say take a good long test drive. Jumping around is just going to keep costing you more money.

my car now is a second car and doesn't get driven that much as would the jeep so gas isn't that much of a concern.

I have the cobb ap and don't get me wrong, I love the car. it's just the long term of the car like maintenance and if just say the transmission goes bad, the cost to replace it is not going to be cheap.

before I bought the 135, I drove a couple jeeps. loved the power and the looks. but the 135 was a little cheaper.

Do you have a manual or DCT? Most BMW transmissions are pretty reliable these days, yu have three more years before yu'd even have to be concerned about that. Also, I found that Chrysler repairs costs on my Jeep were higher than on my BMWs because with BMWCCA you get a good discount. Chrysler wanted to charge me to service my A/C.. My Jeep did not even have that!

Costs to service the SRT8 engine are going to be similar to BMWs, maybe even a bit more because of the wear and tear the engine places on the rest of the drive train. Chrysler is not known for great engineering.

You know its all Fiat engineering now, right? It's alot better than it used to be.

That being said, SRT8s are nice, underwhelming performance for the price tag though. This is really something you need to decide though, because its apples to oranges, and should be 100% your decision.

You know what Jeep stands for?
Just Empty Every Pocket

Seriously.......i just drove by a gas station, gas is at $4.00.
You ready to push around the HEMI at 9MPG?????

If you really want one of those......just wait and pick one up used in 2-3yrs for half the price. That would soften the blow$$$$

Wait for the 2014 Jeep SRT. Coming out next spring. Supposed to be much better than the 12s and 13s. Check out jeepgarage.org for details.

I love how people throw gas mileage into this. If you're looking for a performance car, why care about gas mileage? I chose the 135i since it was slightly on par with my last car's performance, stock. Better handling but it does get better city MPG but a little worse highway MPG than my last car which I started to see AFTER I had the car since I never had that as a factor when buying the car.

Of course the SRT-8 Jeep isn't getting a good amount of MPG since it weighs 2 1/2 tons with a 6.4l engine pushing 470+HP through an auto gear box that powers all 4 wheels. It does a good job at holding it's own but the price it cost's to get one is more than what the 6.1l Jeep SRT8 was new. If you want the Jeep and can sell the 135i for a good price or trade it in for a good price while getting a new Jeep SRT8 for a good price too, then do it and don't look back. That's what I'm going to do with a CTS-V Wagon sometime.

To me it seems that you mind is leaning more towards getting the Jeep. I say get the Jeep and sell your car if your finances allow.

I've had two Jeeps in the past, never do it again. They may be better now, but they were trouble back some years ago.

Honestly, I want a tj rubicon with the 4 ltr. I live where it snows and 4 wheeling has always been appealing to me. It can only be a second vehicle for me though as it just is not always practical.

The decision is yours and only you know what you will be happy with. For me when I get a Wrangler I intend to keep it a long time. That is uncommon for me as I tend to change cars every few years which is a terrible financial decision. So buying something that I will be keeping really changes things when comparing a wrangler to other cars I buy and makes it a bit of a different decision altogether. That factored in with my wife's tastes, the number of parking spots I have, and my need to get into work in the snow all add into my decision but may not for you. it's always a tough call, good luck.

If you're looking for justification this may not be the best site for such affirmation. In the end the decision is yours.

The MPG is about right. A guy I work with has one and although it looks awesome on the inside and outside and performs well, the real world MPG is about 11 around town. If you are prepared for that, then yeah go for it. BTW he wants to trade his in and thinking about a BMW one of the main reasons MPG!
