I cracked my windshield and safelite is telling me I have to buy the windshield with the rain sensor because that is what my 128i originally has.

is this true? Since the car is getting a little older, I just wanted the windshield without the sensor to save some cash.

edit: also they are saying they only have the green tint not even the gray tint unless I buy oem

Call me crazy, but I'm fairly certain the wipers wont work if you don't have the sensor, or have it covered (it's part of what the rear-view mirror attaches to).

I dunno about you, but I always go OEM for the glass because I'm OCD about that stuff and I think it helps re-sale value (probably like how these vitamin supplements help :/ ). We just replaced my wife's Merc. windshield and got the OEM glass, I would say do that, but at the very least, you definitely need glass compatible with the sensor.

Sensor is not on the glass, it's in the rear view mirror bracket, the glass needs a clear "window" where the bracket joins the windshield in order to operate.

I've used Safelite's replacement glass & have no complaints.

when you get safelite to replace the glass, make sure you request OEM glass specifically....if you don't, they will bring generic glass.

So I decided to hire another shop for the job. Safelite probably does fine work, but I think the tech I talked to was a little confused himself about BMW windshields. Also, I have a high deductible so my wallet is biting the bullet on this one.

Alot of these shops and even dealers sub out the glass work so safelite could still be doing the job.

If you don't mind me asking, what's the cost of replacing the windshield for the 1er with rain sensor provisions?

My quotes ranged from $390 to $620. I'm assuming the higher prices are for OE windshields.

Actually, when I got my windshield replaced about six months ago, the OEM windshield was a little bit cheaper than the non-OEM windshield they wanted to provide. Fortunately, I found a very helpful Safelite associate that was able to locate an OEM windshield so be sure to ask. FYI: I paid $550 for the OEM windshield.
