How long will my turbos last
I bought my car new in July 2008. A few years later I had the dreaded wastegate rattle and had them replaced under warranty at 49,950..
Now my car has 115,000 and I have changed the oil every 5,000 miles the last few years. The reason I posted the question is I still love the car and want to continue to drive it a least a few more years. My turbos are at 65,000 now. Is it reasonable to expect them to last 100,000 miles before I will need to replace them again?.. thanks

I was told years ago that when a BMW part fails They send it back to Germany and it is reviewed and re-engineered. So, the point I'm making is that my replacement turbos may (and have already) last much longer than the original. But I realize that all parts will fail at some point. I would think that a quality car .. with quality parts should last 100K.
Understanding lots of factors are involved here. ie. driving habits, service intervals.. etc. Not a cheap repair are the turbos.

It's hard to say. I think it really depends on the abuse they take. If this is just fun spirited driving they should last. If your abusing them with something like JB4 they will fail earlier.

After a while it seems that repairs are too much $$ to maintain a 9 year old car..

60-80k is how long stock turbos usually last.

I'm at 65K on my TT's. What to do.. what to do... guess I'll wait till they fail, unless a good deal can be had and a reasonable install on a new set.
It's just hard sinking big money in an 9 year old car.

Had the dreaded waste gate rattle start a few weeks ago, but it wasn't clear that that was the issue... until today. Yup, nearly 114,000 miles and turbos need to be replaced. The turbos themselves are cheap compared to the labor costs for BMW technicians. We pay for our pleasures in life, so I will bite the bullet, pay the price and move on with life. All good things in life wear out eventually.

What are the signs of failing turbos? Mine has had the waste gate rattler since I bought it but the car still pulls strong and smooth. The car now has 130,000 (81,000 miles) and is MHD stage 1+.

honestly i love my n54 135 too much to let her go for stuff like this. i have not driven many cars but my decently modded 135i engine and suspension just drives way to perfect to let her go, even though she rattles shes very powerful and for now the mhd is masking the issue big time, very thankful for mhd!.

Rattle has absolutely nothing to do with the tune you have.
Shaft play I might attribute somewhat to a tune as the faster you spin it the more it heats up. But for the love of god stop spreading BS about tuned wastegate failure.

There's no smoke but I do get the occasional 30FF code. When I get some spare cash, I'm going to replace the boost solenoids to see if that helps. Yes it does. Both JB4 and MHD have options that hold the waste gates at an open position to stop them from rattling. |

Well here's a video on how to install the waste gate rattle repair kit, but requires welding :
however this vid shows how to take up the slack which is more feasible: https://youtu.be/ttz0ihRRQLQ Last edited by Mr Gasser; 03-12-2017 at 03:32 PM.. |

I know two local guys with 200K on their turbos, original OEM never changed and tuned since day 1 almost. One is running 23psi daily the other around 20. Neither have failed or smoke and the cars are NOT driven gently. Im at 140K on OEM original turbos, tuned since 50K and they spool and make boost like new. Its up to chance and how often the oil is changed and what type of oil is used.
Get some LiquiMoly, run it for 5K or less and change it asap.
