Help Calm Me Down . . .
Okay . . . .
I dropped my car off today at 9:00 AM to have the BMW factory alarm "module" installed per my sales contract. The people on the service drive were very observant and on the ball--I was somewhat impressed. I was on my way in a loaner car in 30 minutes. They told me my car would be done early afternoon---3:00 PM "at the latest." I returned to the dealer at exactly 3:00. I was attended to immediately and they proceeded to check on the status of my vehicle. When the person returned they told me they were "having problems" installing the module and they were having to "retro-fit" it. (I’m thinking . . . "problems? . . . retrofit?") They went on to say they needed 40 minutes more to finish the job and another 20 minutes to wash my vehicle. I quickly pointed out I specifically requested no wash and it is on the work order. I told them where I'd be waiting and was assured they come get me when my vehicle was ready. After an hour had past I strolled up to the service drive where I saw what I thought was most certainly my vehicle sitting in the drive. I asked an attendant that was there and they told me my service advisor was on the phone and they'd check with him as soon as he was off. (Apparently he was too busy to tell anyone that my car was ready to go). He was on the phone for 10 more minutes and when he finally finished they apparently told him I was waiting. And sure enough, that was my car that had been sitting there for the last 15 or 20 minutes while I waited . . . . He told me what took so long was a "software update." I asked how the alarm operates and he said just lock and unlock as normal and the alarm would arm and disarm. Okay, is there any paperwork, instructions, anything for me to refer to? No. ”Where is the module, I mean where was it physically installed can you tell me please,” I asked. “Under the dash,” he said. When I got home I found black marks not only on the inside driver’s door but on the kick panels and passenger seat. No freaking respect for my vehicle. I understand how seeming minor this is, but I really feel like I’ve got molested here, my car I mean. Hopefully you folks can “talk me down.” How exactly is the factory alarm supposed to operate? I’d appreciate any feedback. |

deep breath...
It's just a car... It is not an extension of your very being... It is just a car... Black marks can be wiped off... You are driving a BMW which means you are one of the luckiest people on the planet. To put things in perspective, 4 billion other humans are going to go to sleep tonight after eating a bowl of cold rice and cleaning their AK-47. You have a 330 and live in the US- you are doing pretty well... Cowboy up. Edited to Add: I've been coming off as harsh lately, but seriously- you got a scuff on the door. I mean, you are using the word "Molested" to describe your feelings about a scuff on the door... Yea, it sucks and it would be nicer if techs paid a bit more attention and either didn't do stuff like that or cleaned it up after they did- but out of all the problems in the world and all the problems you could possibly have, describing a scuff on the door of your Bimmer as "molestation" is really over the top. |

Don't waste your energy getting frustrated. Sounds like there was no permanant damage, I'd be glad for that.
I installed the alarm 'module' myself in my M3, and there were no manuals, etc that I can remember. There was the motion sensor that goes in the headliner pod, a tilt-sensor that was installed in the trunk on the passenger side, and the siren module that goes in the engine compartment close to the micro filter for the AC. Hope that helps. Clean those scuffs, go for a drive, and relax. |

CMD, I can understand that you are quite upset with compounding issues adding fuel to the fire so to speak.
Let the dealer/service manager know about the marks and arange to have them clean the marks off while you wait. As long as the alarm is OK and you have the latest software that works, then there is no point in getting yourself worked up about it. Main thing is, you have a great new car, even newer alarm system for piece of mind and I'm sure that they will attend to your car and clean it up. Get them to spray the inside with a can of "New Car Smell"!!!!! Take care.

Yeah, it's the factory alarm. From what I can tell it is working. Apparently they had to upgrade my software in order for it to work. I didn't get much out of the service advisor. No instruction on how to use was given. |

The alarm software needs to be loaded at installation, its done via the "Alarm Retrofit" function on the GT1 computer at the dealer. That is what the "software upgrade" was.

I don't think you're being too picky to expect your car to be well cared for and clean when your dealer has it. Next time, put a few bumper stickers on the loaner, and let some ice cream melt in the passenger seat and see how they like it.
I would mention it to them, in a controlled tone, and tell them that you are disappointed with the condition of the vehicle. Also tell them that it will be reflected if BMWUSA contacts you for a service feedback, and if not you will contact them.

That's why I would've come to the forum and searched for the alarm install DIY and ... done it myself. Easy plug and play stuff like that I won't let the dealer near my car.
When I do go, I make sure to take the SA out to the car to examine it and if there's anything wrong I don't sign the paperwork until it's taken care of. I've had too many times where they've rushed and broken more than they fixed. Don't get me wrong, the techs are AWESOME. My wife's best friend's husband is a senior BMW tech; he's told me there's a hiearchy though, and based on where you're at is what you work on. Alarm installs and small crap gets handled by the guy who just got promoted from lot boy. Not the guy who's rebuilding an M motor for a paying customer. And they're always short-handed/pushed to get things done as fast as possible so they can charge book rate and get more done. Best advise he's ever given me; if you want it done right when you talk to the SA make sure to let them know they've got the car as long as they need it. If you're a toe tapper you're car's gonna get messed up while they rush. It's not intentional, it's just what happens. |

Funny thing, after reading this post I decided to finally make an appointment to get my alarm installed, I already have the part just need it installed. The tech told me that at this moment they can not installed the alarm because they are waiting for BMW to give them retro fit instructions. I’m like, “what do you mean retro fit instructions I know other people have got the alarm installed with no problem". He said there was a problem with how they now need to run an extra wire to install the alarm correctly. He said he was going to investigate and would give me a call as soon as he found out.

Tech just called me back. He said he was incorrect. The retro fit was for the sat radio not the alarm. Told him I would be needing a new dome cover because mine was not slotted and told me that was not covered under warranty. I told him about technical bulletin SI B 65 04 05. He checked it out and said I was correct.
