120d coupe - Fan never stops

Hi!

I have just picked up my new (used) 2008 model 120d m-sport coupe. Loving it so far, but one thing bothers me slightly: the cooling fan doesn't stop until about 5 minutes (if not more) after I have turned off the engine. Now if it was warm outside I would understand but as it's -8 degrees, and the engine is cold enough for me to put my hand on I'm not entirely sure what's going on.

So my question is, do your diesel 1-series' keep their fans spinning after you turn your engine off or is there something wrong with mine?

I plan to use the "hidden" OBC menu to read the oil and cooling fluid temp while driving to see if the car thinks it is getting warm or not, anyone know what these temps should ideally be?

Hope someone can help

Definately something wrong If you ever hear your 1-series fan going when you think it shouldn't have a look at the temp sensor readout in the OBC menus.

Todays tests:

After work (8 hours parked in -7 degrees): Starts at 55 c, rises to between 85 and 95 depending on driving (seems fairly "real, i.e. more throttle = higher temp).

Drive up to parents (15 minutes, mostly up hill): Shows 107 degrees when I park, fan going like mad for at least 5 minutes.

Drive home (after 2 hours parked in -10 degrees): Shows 106 at startup, clearly wrong. Stays around there (down hill, no throttle) until it suddenly drops to 60 then pops up to around 92-93 and stays there until i get home. No fan upon parking.

Will give BMW a call on Monday and see what they think, but it worries me that the car has probably been driving around with the cooling on full, meaning it's been running pretty cold for a long time. Hence if you think the fan is running unnecessarily much, check your temps Why BMW don't provide a gauge in the dash is beyond me...

EDIT: Not many views but in case anyone has the same problem, turns out the temp sensor was dead (according to BMW it was full of coolant!). Got it replaced and the car has been fine ever since

Thx for sharing.

I have a 2009 e90 330d that does the same thing. It seems to run for 10-20 minutes after car stops. I live in australia where it is not extremely worm so i was abit confussed when my fan turns on randomly when car stop.

Better get dealership to look into it. Sound like the same problem.

I had a 118d loaner, four door hatch, last month. The fan never came on like that. I ran the car kind of hard too. When I would park it, the fan came on for a minute or two. Nothing longer. Temps were like 6'C at that time.

I would get it checked out.
