Comfort Access: how long until the car shuts off?

I heard if you leave the car with the key in your pocket and the car is still running, it eventually turns off. How long does it take?

I don't have CA on my e90, but my e92 willl. I sure would hope that the engine would shut off.

That is correct. (I have tried: I once drove around for 15 minutes without the key as a test, and it never shut off)

If the car is running, and they keys are taken out - you get a warning on the dash of a key with a line through it. The car continues running indefinatly. If you stop/stall - you have 5-10 seconds to turn the car back on (without the key) as with all E90's. If you stop the car, open the drivers door and close the drivers door - your "courtesy" restart is cancelled.

It would be a bit stupid to drive around without the key though.

So if you gave the car to a valet parker, you can just leave with the key and let him park... Then he can't move it after right?

Yup.

But then he can't go fetch it either.

Sometimes you want them to move it. Say if he uses your car to park in another car. If he can't move your car, they might try something - like lifting the car, or sqeezing the other car past yours.

Tell the valet its a normal key and have him put it in the dash like a normal human would . I have a system like CA on my FX and it confuses all of the valets...

I have CA. Whenever I give the car to a valet, I shut the car off and restart it with the key in the socket (or whatever you want to call it)

Kinda has it's pro and cons to be able to keep the car running when the key is not in the car. But def should be an option to automatically shut the car off after the key is not sense for X seconds or something.

Ok, but then if you are a woman - and you leave your keys in your purse (handbag) on the seat next to you. Someone smashes your window and steals the bag...then how do you get home to safety?

At least if the car continues running - you can get to safety.

If you get carjacked, they can drive the car (until they are far away from you - and can't shoot you) but when they stop the car, it will not start again - then the tracking company can go get it.

This is another new thing for cops if you start driving around without the key. What if you get pulled over and the cops ask you to turn off the car and throw your key out the window (but you left the key at home). Cop might think you hot wire the car and throw you in jail

Then you go driving down the highway and your key fob's battery dies and the car stops.

Its a safety feature

They can't throw you in jail if the car is registered in your name.

Also, you wouldn't start your car - go inside, leave your key and then go out. How would you get back home? The car won't restart out of that 10 second grace period, and you wouldn't be able to lock it.

You wouldn't do it by mistake, because as you get back into the car - there would be a warning "NO KEY"

You can just plug it in the socket while the engine is running. It's fine.

Argh!
I just want a regular key that twists to start!

Or, put a computer chip in my wrist and I want the car to listen to me whe I say, "start", "stop", "massage my butt", "evacuate burrito gas" (vacuum seat cushions you know.), "turn on headlights", etc...

"Stop the car and throw your key out the window"? Is this something cops ask people to do? Never heard of that.

isn't this dangerous especially for the people who parks in their garage. Some people who forget to turn off the engine will end up killing everyone in the house. Traditionally taking the car key out of the car will logically mean the car is off, but with Comfort Access the car will stay on.

My question is that with comfort access, will the car beep or something when the car is running and the driver door is open? This may sound stupid but I'm sure every one have days when they can't wait till get into the house and crash on the sofa. So turning off the car might not be something as apparent.

As you get out the car, it goes BIIING and shows you the warning of no key.
If you are one of those poeple who are so absent minded, you would FORGET TO TURN YOUR CAR OFF - don't get comfort access.

I personally have never forgotten to turn my car off, EVER.
