Assuming that you are asking "engine" oil:

It is all in the manual but just for a clarification, for the 1M, BMW authorized oils are: fully synthetic LL-1 (or LL-4 depending on where you are located) SAE 5W 30, 0W 40 or 0W 30 grade oils (all are OK) if I still have a good memory.

My car just had the 0W 40 LL-1, Mobil 1.

The capacity is 6 liters plus 0.5 liter reserve, total 6.5 liters.

Anyone, please feel free to correct me if I remember something wrong.

I just changed my oil yesterday at 5,500 miles. When I checked the owner's manual to see how much oil I needed (I figured it would be the same as the E36 M3 - 6.9 qts, but wanted to make sure), I was surprised to see there was no information.

The manual just said to take the car to the dealer for oil changes. What hooey. I have always changed my own oil. But then this is the first new car I have ever bought, so I did take it to the dealer for the 1200 mile oil change. It was a little unsettling to see the digital scheduler put the next oil change at 12,000 miles.

I got the filter from the dealer and the 5W-30 Mobil 1 from Costco.

It was easy. The filter pulls out with the cap. There is a little trap door in the belly pan just beneath the oil pan plug. Just for grins, we took step-by-step photos.

Hey slats-
Any problems with initial oil drain flow getting into the plastic undershield?

Also, I'm not an expert but the Mobil 1 5W-30 you mentioned isn't on BMW's list of approved oils. Only their 0W-40 meets the LL-1 spec ...

A little oil did accumulate there, but was easily wiped out. Next time I'll stuff shop towels around the trap door opening to soak up any splash.

I'm pretty sure 5W-30 is approved. Besides, that is what I have used in my M3 for years.

That's what I have been told too, for Mobil 1 brand, I also checked the bottles and 0W-40 was indeed mentioning this LL-1 and BMW approval on the bottle but I forgot to check the 5W-30 Mobil 1 bottle. Tomorrow, very probably I will pass from the same oil station that made my oil change and I will ask to see one bottle of Mobil 1 5W-30 and post what I see.

The car was parked like 24 hours following the oil change and today I found a few drops of oil under the car, I want to see if there is a bolt that needs to be tightened or something else. I checked the oil level after the change and it was OK showing topped, so can't be high oil level. I think best is to see first and if everything is not looking dry and clean, just clean the whole area and wait to spot where it is leaking.

I was using castrol Rs 10w60 on my e46 m3 and my e87 120i, just feel curious that since 1M is turbo charge and turbo generate huge amount of heat, I wonder that 5w30 is good enough
