We've done this to my car to change the ashtray, gear stick surround and I drive surround before. Taking off the ashtray lid is tricky but can be done with patience. Here are the instructions:-

You do not need to take off the pedal and under the glovebox trim. You'll have to lift up the handbrake as high as you can.

We tried to wrap it in 3M CF vinyl and it woulnd't hold cause of the plastic fabric...

I have 3M nidoc cf vinyl and hopefully it could stick on it well.
