I think we can all agree that BMW makes amazing automobiles. This is my third and once you drive them nothing else compares. Your hooked. But, this issue looks to be a flaw?
BMW should recognize this and make it a 35K service. 35/70/105 it just sucks to know that I will be doing this every 30k or so and it ain't cheap. |

How do you know you need your valves cleaned?
I have a buddy with an RS4, what he noticed was a slight lack of power and poor thottle response. I think in extreme cases you will have a rough idle too. My friend took apart his intake manifold and scraped the carbon off. He used SeaFoam to spray down the CB twice a day and let it soak into the valve buildup. Then he could scrape the softened CB off. |

That doesn't sound too bad from the Dealer. I'm gonna call a local shop....found this on the Net. Anyone use this before?

I really don't see how this wouldn't be covered by CPO... it's not just a part of the powertrain... IT IS the powertrain!

I wonder how many of those labor hours are actually just spent waiting for a solvent to soak into the deposits before scraping it up...

When my HPFP went for the 2nd time they also said they had to clean the carbon out. They said out of warranty it would have cost $4300 also the fuel injectors went.. This was at 30 or 32k miles.

I have a friend with an RS4. He took his manifold off and placed it in a kiddie bath full of seafoam for 3 days. After that the carbon came off with a plastic spoon.
Its a problem with all DI cars...and its something that I really think I need to do with 75K on the clock. |

Yes, I would highly recommend a thorough cleaning, especially with mine being so noticeable after only 20k...

Might even take it to the track to see if there are any improvements in that aspect, but I doubt it. For the record, I have trapped 117mph in the 1/4 as of lately before the cleaning. I guess we might see what it does after the cleaning.

I did the Seafoam treatment at 20k miles just before installing a BMS catch can. After the initial smoke and sputtering, the car did seem to run a bit smoother. Took about 30 miles of highway mileage for the CEL to clear itself. After the CEL cleared, i checked the codes and notice that the ECU logged a misfire on two or three cylinders. I only mention that in case you don't have the tools to clear the codes before taking it in for dealer service.
When installing the catch can I did notice oil lining the OEM tube that routes the PCV gases to the intake. While I was at it, I dropped the intercooler and noticed a small amount of oil pooled in the bottom of the core... About a teaspoon. I flushed the intercooler with diesel, then hot soapy water and let it dry before reinstalling. At 23K miles, I checked both the catch can and intercooler. The catch can was dry, but the intercooler had a few drops of oil in the bottom. I'm not positive, but I suspect some of the oil that makes its way through the system to the intake (and causes the carbon build-up) comes from oil blowing by the turbo seals. I'm not suggesting that the catch can doesn't work, I just think the PCV gases are not the only thing contributing to the carbon build-up. |

There is an up side, I had mine cleaned at 45K and my car went from stuttering at every stop to a perfect idle. My gas mileage went up also. Seems to cure a lot of problems
BTW, media blaster with walnut shells does a great job |

Aside from the expense is there any speculation of a long term helping solution (not fix as that won't happen) aside from a catch can and meth which is still debatable of how much they help. Possibly a set of polished SS vales, polished ports (since it's DI the ill affects of truly polishing might help) and then on top of that maybe soaking the valves and ports in a recommended snake oil lubricant that adheres to metal.
