Question on tint with auto-dimming mirrors

I've noticed that the side view mirrors become very dark when they auto-dim. I think with tint they would be almost unusable. Is there any way to disable them from auto-dimming, or maybe the light sensor in the rear view is variable and will dim less if I have tint?

If you just want the tint to reduce heat and UV, you can use the Air Blue tint from LLumar. It cut's down 43% of the solar energy, and 99% of the UV light, and it's basically clear. You can't tell it's tinted. It's ceramic, so it doesn't interfere with the electronics either. If you are after the dark look though, it won't help.

I'll have to look into that, thanks.

Bump... anybody know if I can disable the auto-dimming side mirrors?

I have 15% tints all around, and barely noticed a difference. If you can't drive iwth the auto-dimmers as is, then dont get your windows tinted. The difference is insignificant IMO. The auto-dimming featuer already darkens your view to the point where all you see is headlight, so adding a tint wont make much of a difference, as tints almost act like sunglasses; you will still see the lights.

also, i have no heard to being able to turn auto-dimming off.

I disabled the autodimmer by putting a small black sticker over the sensor on the rear view mirror.

My windows are tinted (30%) but it did not make much of a difference - when the autodimmer kicked in, all you could see was headlights only. With the autodimmer disabled, now I can actually see cars in the rear view mirror at night.

The only sensor is the little dot in the middle of the rearview mirror. I'm gunna try the sticker method because I really don't like auto-dimming mirrors...can't see cars with lightbars behind you at night.

I think there are two sensors - 1 on the mirror side, on top middle (the one to cover up) and another on the front of the mirror, on the passenger side. I am guessing that the computer takes the difference in brightness between the two sensors - I tried putting a small flashlight to the front sensor, and that also disabled the dimming. Obviously not very practical - much easier to block the rear sensor.

One easy way is to take a post-it, make it black with a pen, and then use a paper hole puncher to make a round dot from the sticky side of the post-it. It's just the right size to cover the sensor. Cheap, easy, and easy to remove if you don't like it.
