Scott26 is basically confirming that the M2 is a 4-banger today.

And as one of the last simple, straight-forward BMW M, should be a keeper for many, many, many years. But the prospect of super light M (dare we say CSL-like) sounds like a blast... I hope they have the Alpha 4C squarely in sight... |

Shoot me now, but am I the only one that thinks the 2 series looks ugly, especially from behind.

i would DEF hate a 4 cylinder in the M2. despite M GmbH being great at motorsports, a 4 cylinder just lacks sound and feels extremely "off the rack" - without soul.
a 4 cylinder in the M2 would be my reason not to get one. then id rather go for the M3/4 instead.

im 100% with you on that... but i am hoping that for the M2 they'll change a few things to make it look acceptable from behind

Am sure an M2 would look good, but the m235i etc, they just look weird. Dislike those wheels, and the rear end looks unfinished. The front is the nicest part. But the airdams look out of proportion.

I'm sure it'll be good with 4 cylinders and a turbo too. Hopefully they'll be able to bring the spirit from their 1000bhp+ M12/7 F1 engines to a road car..

Scott's recent posts about the M2:
"BMW want[s] the fastest four cylinder car in its segment. They also want the M2 to be the most progressive and dynamic car in its segment as well as the lightest performance car. They want a car that has a soul, unlike the Mercedes-Benz AMG A45/CLA 45 which are soulless to drive." (Jan 20, 2014) (http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showp...77&postcount=3) "Based on initial sketches. You will know an M2 as it will be very different from an M235i in its stance and muscular bodywork. The appearance leads on from the M235i Race car, typical facia with upturned central intake, aerodynamic spoilers around the outline of the brake intake with additional air curtain. The breather on the front wing will occupy the full length. There is a wider track so both front and rear arches will be pronounced to accommodate 19" wheels. Although 18" will be offered. Signature quad M exhaust ports with aerodynamic developed diffuser and a double edged Carbon fibre roof will be standard." (Jan 20, 2014) (http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showp...7&postcount=83) "The timescale works absolutely in favour with the new BMW M3 and BMW M4 Coupe because a gap of two years allows establishment and progress. By this time there will be the Competition Package for the M3 and M4 and there will also be progress for the two cars in an additional specification. Then you have to think about the next M5 and its leap in technology, lightweight and power increase to just over 600 PS. Granted the M5 won't be on the market at this point but the arrival will be just over twelve months from the G30. This is where the gap opens for the M2 and there will be ample room for co-existence. The interesting thing that really shows progress, is that on a presentation briefing between Toyota and BMW on the Z4 Replacement which is the Z3 is the ability to integrate super sports car specifications into that car by extensive use of Carbon Fibre. The Z3 will be the first car, along with its Toyota twin to use a Carbon tub in its price range for a premium manufacturer even undercutting the Alfa Romeo 4C. The bonnet lid and bootlid will also be CFRP and as will areas of the suspension. It leads to possibly further advances of CFRP on the M2 as the time frame allows for further and extensive application. The four cylinder resonates with the approach to lightweight application over numbers. The new BMW M3 and M4 begin the Carbon revolution at M. It's not all about the numbers its about precision through weight reduction. To understand the significance. Look at that Carbon bodied Maybach at around 1 million dollars. Granted the 7er will not be extensive in application but with all the key panels approached to be fabricated from CFRP it will be far, far less than that Maybach, not even a fraction of the cost. That is how important this is. Later this year as BMW begin the roll out to the first BMW to adopt a significant lightweight approach their will be media Technology days where you will understand the full outline of how innovative and beneficial this will be for BMW. Start to get excited." (Jan 21, 2014) (http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showp...&postcount=157)

I agree, I think it will be tough for BMW to make a truly compelling case for a turbo-4 M2 when the turbo-6 M235i is already in the 325hp/tq neighborhood. The only thing I can think of is that BMW makes the M2 significantly lighter (carbon roof, lightweight seats), coupled with better standard performance parts (LSD, better aero, wide track) to offer a better dynamic package than the M235i while still having potentially lower HP/TQ numbers.

I'm not a fan of the trend - the # of gears going up and the # of cylinders going down. Use to be a big 8 with 4 on the floor and now we're heading to a small 4 with 8 speed paddles and 26+ PSI.
For this, on top of heritage and the sound, I would like to see a 6 in the M2 and not a 4 banger. |

Most of these responses make me laugh. Name an M car that has not been awesome? Did the 1M suck? Nope. Does the M3 suck? Nope. Does the m5 suck? Nope. Speculate all you want on whether or not the 2M (M2) will be a 4 or a 6 cyl, but in the end, whatever the M division chooses to use, it will be awesome just like every other M car they have made. It will be faster than the 1M, it will handle better than the 1M. Some of you may not want it to be better because you want to think it will never get better than the 1M, but it's going to be better.

You're right the M2 will be a great car but people have preferences about engines which define cars. OP asked for peoples opinions and that's what your getting. In a community that debates over N/A or turbo, MT over DCT on the same platform, what engine ends up in the car matters to people. |

It might rock, but I still would like a nicely tuned I6 twin turbo in that M2. Otherwise just call it a 2M...."M" supposed to be the best of its rank, how can you be the best if you're 2 cylinders under an M235i...? lol numbers don't lie....
w.e. direction BMW goes with this, I'm sure (or hope) they'll have a reason behind it.

my guess is that the M2 will *technically* be a very very good car-----as BMW knows it will be judged quite harshly. Whether it fires up the imagination like the 1M does is not known.
As in the music industry-----follow up performances are hard! |
