DCT gets faster with a tune.
I found this article from Vishnu Tuning pretty interesting. It is basically their update on what they found with tuning the N55 motor.
Notice where it says "A 340whp n55 with 7DCT feels about as fast as a 380whp n55 with 6AT/MT. The engine is always in the right gear and doesn't lose an ounce of steam between gears. Truly exceptional. Shifting manually results in zero throttle closure and aboslutely no loss of boost between gears. The only time you see a boost drop/throttle closure is when you let the transmissions shift itself at 7000rpm (see log below) " http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=429987 It would be interesting if we could get some actual numbers on this. I was actually just reading the title and it didnt really convey what I was saying. I guess what I am trying to say is the performance gap between a manual and a DCT gets larger with tuning. |

What Vishnu is describing is the normal behavior of a DCT... The tune doesn't change how the DCT functions.

You are correct. However the loss of boost for a tuned car is a bigger deal than the loss of boost for a stock car. I didnt really think of this hence why I just posted it, but when you tune a DCT car you get more out of the tune than say a manual car. You will get a better performance increase. Again this is just what it sounds like...so I would be interested to see some actual facts and supporting evidence.

I guess, but our cars spool up so fast anyway there isn't much of a difference in acceleration.

they spool up very very fast on a bone stock car but when you tune it you start to feel some noticable turbo lag.

Really? I haven't been in a tuned 6mt n54/n55 so I don't know, but I always see "turbo lag is gone/reduced" in reviews... interesting.

i just got my flashed on friday and it went from feeling like an na car to feeling a smooth build up of power. It doesn't feel as bad like some single turbo cars I've driven but my 6MT has a small amount of lag now.

I am not saying it definitely is or is not faster...but it would be interesting to see a Manual tuned 11' 135i vs DCT tuned 11' 135i...I would be pretty interested in seeing the numbers.
I still only have 178 miles on my car so I have no intention of doing any runs or tunes until 1200+ miles, but after that I would definitely be up to try to test this out. Basically do 2 or 3 runs stock vs stock...and then 2 or 3 runes tuned vs tuned...this would probably be easier if with a flash device like cobb tuning offers...too bad they have not come out with anything for the N55...does anyone even know the update on this? |

Actually easier with something like PROcede. I can swap between stock map and tune in under 3 seconds, while driving.

Procede allows you to switch to stock map in (Map 0) via the cruise control stalk or double tapping the DTC button... to any map for that matter, stock, map 1, map 2, etc.

Haven't dyno'd it. But butt dyno feels great (and dead even with E92 M3 DCT.) Search the forum though, plenty of PROcede dyno results around, just try to find one that compares with stock as dyno results fluctuate from dyno to dyno.

Obviously it depends on the tune. They don't all work the same way. My car never felt like NA, but after my tune (Dinan), it felt a little less laggy.

Which reminds me, not sure if all N54s behave this way, but my friend gave me a ride in his 6mt 335i. At low RPMs (1500-2500) there is definitely some turbo lag, unlike my N55 which spools right away even before tune (but quicker with tune.)
