Cool

I doubt seriously and that anyone with the BMW PE would back date to stock. I have not heard the Magna on a 1er, not sure about sound levels, or just how well it really does in city or open roads. BUT, I did not wish any codes thrown on this one with an exhaust that was not really what the engineers intended....[no flames here, I know perfectly well not everything has to be BMW] but on this one, for price within 100$, there was no contest. Get the PE and you will not regret sound, feel, and warranty. Good luck on anyone trading...and good luck on your choice.

I am pretty sure you meant within $1000?

And from everything I heard, I agree with that second statement. I was about to pull the trigger before I got in contact with the guys at Ark, I am just waiting for the prototype to get here so we can see what the finish product will look/sound like.

btw, BMWmike, if you decide to purchase the BMW PE from a dealer, I know one that sells it for about $650 in the LA area

Cool

Sorry on the number misunderstanding...I actually meant $100-- but it was a bit of a dangling modifer---I intended for sentence to read properly that there was only about a $100 difference between the Magna and the BMW PE...sorry..and yes, I think I paid about 650 for mine. The Magna was maybe 75-100 less?? Then there was no contest...sorry for poor syntax there...

I am not selling mine. I have become used to it and it has mellowed somewhat in tone so now I am happy. At first I was a bit surprised by how aggressive it sounded.

Glad to hear it worked out for you in the end.

I'm still thinking about doing this myself. I'm a little on the fence based on whether this is DIYable or not...just to give you an idea of where I'm at, in terms of proficiency: I've done my own sway bar and rear shocks and springs, but I found the front struts to be a little beyond my ability.

I think the exhaust shouldn't be too difficult - it's just the cutting that worries me. Is that pretty easy as long as you have a reciprocating saw? I'm looking at a 6 amp Craftsman model - will that be powerful enough? Do I need to but special blades?

Thanks for any info!

I bought a Sawzall at Harbor Freight for $35 or so and was able to cut through the exhaust pipe in 5 mins. The rest is just swapping some pieces fromt eh old exhaust to the new and bolting it in. I did the swaybar swap as well and this is easier. Also some ramps really help to get the rear end of the ground.

Here's a DIY link, if you sroll down on the first page you'll see my pic with all the items that need to be transferred.

Cool - thanks again. Looks pretty easy. Will I need a specific type of Sawzall blade? Just a metal cutting one? I don't really know anything about these tools.

Yeah metal cutting blade. If you look closely at the pic in the link with all my tools you can see the saw I used.

I got the PE put on a couple of weeks ago. At first I was thinking it might be a little too aggressive but now I like it a lot better. There is a good bit of resonance in the 2000-2500 range but I guess I'm getting used to it because it doesn't seems as intrusive now. All in all, I recommend it.

Same here, it was a bit boomey in the lower rpm range at first. I even thought about selling. It has mellowed somewhat and it's ok now.

Isn't the 2k-2.5k resonance annoying for highway driving? I'm seriously considering the PE, but then i hear some find it too intrusive. I guess this all is personal taste about how loud. i really find the stock exhaust way too quiet for such a fine engine.

I know what you mean - it seems like I spend a lot of time in that rev range and I definitely don't want it to sound annoying.

It seems like most of the sound clips I've heard have been good, but I heard one I was unsure about. But it's tough to put much stock in a YouTube video when trying to assess sound quality, I think.

In any case, I totally agree about the stock exhaust being too quiet. it sounds good at times, but just overly refined and reigned in. I want more without it being obnoxious.

Anyway, I pulled the trigger on this yesterday, so I'll let you know what I think when I get it on. Between shipping and install (I'm DIYing), it'll probably be at least 2 or 3 weeks before it's on.

Since installing the PE I really haven't done any significant highway driving, only commuting which is the norm for me. I'll be interested to see how it sounds on a longer trip at a constant higher speed.

Who has been getting the best price on these things? Even if I get my dealership to install it, I'm hesitant to pay list price without asking if there's a better online source.
