Rear fog DIY

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Not sure if anyone has specifically mentioned this for the 1m, but the rear fog lights are equipped and can be activated by shaving the pins off of the stock headlight control unit. There\'s a bunch of DIY on other 1 series forums but I hadn't come across anyone confirming their existence on the 1m. Enjoy.

Here is a link to the DIY on a 1M although it should work on most newer 1 series.

I did this on my M3. We get some serious fog where I live and it's a must do mod for me!

i usually turn them on just so people will stop staring at the quad exhaust and cf spoiler on my 1m, haha. Actually a great feature for safety purposes, now...for the amber corners

Years ago I got pulled over for having a tail light out. It took me 15-20 min to explain to the stupid Ga state patrol about the rear fog light. I even showed him how the switch worked and he nearly gave me a ticket! The only redeeming part is he got soaked in the process.
Good DIY, thanks.

Actually, I wish police here in the states would hand out tickets for incorrect rear fog light usage.

Audi drivers seem to be the worst offenders of driving in clear weather with their rear fog lights on. It looks like current Audi models have two lights (no longer just one side). I didn't think any US-spec cars came with rear fogs, but I always seem Audi and MB cars with rear fogs on -- and I'm assuming these are not folks who modded their car to enable them.

Personally I can't imagine using them more than once or twice a year when weather warrants. I know folks around here like them for tailgaters...

Ok, so I finally got around to doing this mod. (Rear fogs get people riled up and really bother some people but there are areas I drive through on the commute that are very foggy so I wanted an extra measure of obnoxiousness I mean safety.)

I wanted to add a few things to AndyM's tutorial for switch removal, which mfmoses referenced at the beginning of this thread.

Step 2 (removing the vent cover) was a total pain. I always find that DIY instructions always list "remove dongle" as a step but don't describe specifically how to do it. Anyway, prying, pulling, cursing, no success. In the end, I referred to steps 1-3 of a boost gauge install pdf at Burger Motorsports.

http://burgertuning.com/instructions...ge_install.pdf

You're basically going to pry off the driver's side dash panel. After doing that I was able to get enough access to leverage that vent cover partially off. I didn't need to remove it completely. Be careful because it's kind of flimsy. This allows access to the T-20 screws which allows the light switch panel to drop down. I did not have to remove the vent itself, unlike in the pdf above.

Once you have the switch assembly removed from the car, you hop over to the link miula referenced. The rear fogs are controlled by the bottom button. The assembly is easy to take apart, but I'd strongly recommend removing the botttom button completely to get better access to the plastic tabs that prevent the button from working. Removing the button took a bit of screwing around -- I used a small screwdriver to unlock / flip up two plastic tabs on the inside of the button which is white-colored. (This took multiple attempts.) Once the button is removed, it's easy to chop off the plastic tabs. THERE ARE FOUR TABS in total.

After that's done, reassemble everything. Make sure that when you replace the switch assembly into the panel, that you hear a distinct click from each of the four clips. It had a tendency to look seated but push out very easily until I was conscientious about seating each of the four clips.

The button works completely smoothly. I'd prefer a euro-spec one with a lighted LED indicator on the button, but that's not really a cost-effective solution at $150. Hope this is helpful.

Awesome write-up, I am going to give it a try tonight after work and post my impressions. I know it would be nice to have the switch have the light up logo for the fogs but the price is a little steep. There should be an indicator on the middle of the dash light up when the fogs are switched on, correct???

Yeah, when the rear fogs are turned on there is a lit dashboard indicator.

Not much to post. The "mod" is really as simple as advertised, and the pictures are already up. The only thing I will say is be careful when you are trying to pry the vent molding back/up. It's CAN crack. mine was a little borderline, but turned out just fine. The clips holding the light module is a little tough too, start by feeling your way underneath the bottom of the lighting module and you will feel two pegs on both sides that you'll need to push up (towards the lighting module). look at the pics posted above and in the attached thread to understand a little better. Trust me...GREAT mod!
