The 1M would have to be pretty sweet to offset the cost. I think you can get a base model 135i for under $30k right? Base model M1 is going to start at about $48k. You can do a lot with aftermarket parts and $18k.

I feel the same way about my 135. I'm doing a full suspension install so the handling matches the power (Dinan stage 2). This car is so engaging and visceral that I had to buy it once I test drove it. That was 2 yrs ago, and I still feel the same way about my car.

The 1M will be incredible with the wider track and higher end suspension parts and upgraded engine parts and LSD. I hope I don't get a chance to test drive it, or I may be drawn in by it's magic. I'm getting goose pimples just thinking about it.

Having driven both I can say that the 135i is a great car, but the E46 M3 is (in my opinion) without a doubt the better car and the car I'd rather own.

Spent a lot of time at the dealership yesterday, as I was getting a freon leak fixed, third brake light replacement, and hood release wire replaced. I sat in a new Z4, a vert 335, a 750iL, and still like my 135i best. Interior room with 135i and 335 seems the same. Other than the Z4, there's no way I want anything other than the 1. The Z4 was nice, but I prefer the 1. I wanted to sit in the 2003 Z8 Alpina, but the owner just bought it with 5,000 miles on it and going straight to his warehouse. That thing was sweet!!! I read somewhere when the 135i coupe came out that it was one of the best cars BMW has ever built. In my opinion it is the most bang for the buck Bimmer has ever put out. And try the 6mt. I love to row!!!!!

I agree with your entire statement.

The stock handling and ride of the 135i is where this car needs the most work.

OP, if you're ordering a new 135i, then it'll be the new N55 twin scroll, not the N54 you tested.

I'll be very interested in your assessment of the N55 version compared to your review of the N54.

The N55 is a different engine, and it seems BMW did some minor suspension tweaks as well.
Will you get the DCT or the manual?

The new 1M should be really nice, but I'm thinking for someone like you an aftermarket adjustable suspension might be just as nice as what M will do.
And, you'll save a good chunk o change over getting the full on M.

Also, I agree with you that the stock power of this car is plenty.
It agrees with the chassis as it's not too much engine for the chassis, although the suspension is not up to the stock power, imo.
More power without added control is like trying to bake the cake before you've mixed the batter.

BTW, you weren't holding the camera while driving, were you?
On that last left the camera went 90 degrees to the right while the road went left. I was like, "whaaaaa......."!

A base, no options, 135i manual in red has an Edmunds invoice of $34,040.
I doubt you'd be anywhere near $30k let alone under.
