When performance 1 comes out which do you choose?
Rumors are 2 engines for performance 1 series.
2.0 twin turbo for 300hp..possibly 300tq. 3.0 twin turbo for 350hp. I have a hard time to decide which one I like best. Probably need to drive both if they do come out. small displacement and big power is a big turn on for me. Because it is lighter and doesn't eat up as much fuel. However...3.0 doesn't sound too bad either. I'm sure they both can be chipped.

4 cil twin turbo 300hp does it for me only it the weight is much lower than the 6 twin turbo.
The best one series i have driven is the 120d but it lacks power and it s diesel yuk. I have a 135i but when high performance lightweight 4cil twin turbo comes with nice sport seat s etc. the 135i goes. |

why are you fed up with 4bangers?
They are great engines. It just makes me realise that you don't need 3.0 to drive around town. 3.0 is useful for those long straight tracks though.

Depends on 1) the weight difference 2) the price and 3) test drive. If they're going to be the exact same cars but just with different engines - more power always seem good to me but, I'm sure the driving dynamic would change with more hp. |

I had too many in my life 2 rsx-s,civic with b18 engine, mazda protege ,323,a4,jetta,bikes etc name them all. Tired of beating the crap out of them to have some power. The sound is annoying as hell. I like speeding while being stealth CAI, HKS super dragger exhaust,Tanabe exhaust etc been there done that. The only 4 banger I would buy would be an Elise and it would be a track car where you can really open it and high rev. Yes we pay 1.45 a liter for premium gas but 4 banger on the street for me is over...on the track well its a different story

I am buying a 135 for torque! No way I am going back to no torque.
I don't mind my bikes to rev (2006 & 2003 Yamaha R6) but I want a car with power on demand. I don't want to have to downshift 2 gears to pass cars etc. |

I'd be super suprised if a North American "performance" 1'er version came with an I-4 engine, twin turbo or not.
Performance version, whatever they actually end up deciding to call it (plenty of options to choose from there), will most likely retain a massaged N54 for the North American market. Just too much potential with that power unit to waste a ton of money on developing something different for a special performance version that wouldn't sell much volume. |

The weight difference will not be that significant between a 2 liter and a 3 liter. Though, you inaccuratly portrayed the 3.0 liter as only having 350hp, when we know BMW could easily modify the secondary system on the N54 to produce a reliable 380+ hp and 450ft-lb or torque. You won't get better gas mileage with a 2.0, over a 3.0, because any use of the throttle and the turbos on the 2.0 will be spooling. Unless a 2.0 can deliver that kind of toque @ 2k, there is no point in downsizing a track car engine. BTW, it is a 2.0 liter that is useful for those long strait tracks... |

Good point. Although there seems to be a big movement toward smaller engines with big performance (look at the new S4 as 1 example), mainly driven by the sky rocketing fuel cost and tougher emissions standards - in all their markets. That means BMW can start making similar engines for both Europe and NA - which means in the long run they'd be saving money having very similar/exact same engines in all their markets. |

Mark my words, an M variant will be in my garage next to my 66mpg CR-Z. M135i FTW and cheers to the believers/non haters.
And I would rather it not be a 4cylinder. The car would never..and I say NEVER be light enough at a good enough cost. I have a 2800lb 4cylinder and yes its fun. I just prefer not to have 2 seats behind me with a 4banger. A totally reworked N54 will suffice.
