How does one get instantaneous mileage to display? The long-term average it shows now is just discouraging, and not very useful for feedback.

Two ways:

• when mpg shows on the instrument cluster: keep pushing/holding the side-button on the left stalk till it resets the value; the value subsequently shown is the average again, but as you just did a fresh reset, your current mpg is shown due to the brief time period;
• if you got SATNAV: go to the menu showing average mpg and reset.

You can get it coded (remotely or locally) very easily, which is what I did. That's what I preferentially display.
