no wonder people sometimes mistakenly call it 'M1'

even BMW doesn't know what to call it. Just received this notification from BMW trying to sell me a maintenance coverage extension....for my "BMW M1" lol

Isn't "1M" wrong? Shouldn't it be "1 M", like Z4 M, X6 M etc.? I think the official ENG and DE names of the 1 M were:

1 Series M Coupe
1er M Coupé
1 M

The correct names of Mercs also have a space in between the model name and the engine designation - E 63 AMG, S 550; NOT E63 AMG, S550 etc.
Same as Audi RS models - RS 4, RS 6; NOT RS4, RS6 etc. What is interesting is that there is even a difference between "quattro" and "Quattro".

you are right technically....but most people, including the head of ///M at the time of the 1M's launch were referring to it as the "1M" so i think it took to the car quite well. Technically you're right it's the 1-series M or 1er M....but "M1" is definitely wrong!

you're right about the other names too.....

My official vehicle doc + "BMW Mobility Card" (both supplied with the car in 2011) mention "M1" too.

Check yours too (though the layout of those docs may vary from country to country).

i am still so confused as to why BMW told Matchbox to call it "M1". The orange Matchbox car was issued as "1M' but the blue one afterwards as "M1". very strange.

It also does not help when our car is identified as an "M1" in the dialog of the new movie "The Gambler".

yeah very disappointing to hear that! Especially as i've read that Mark Wahlberg was a previous 1M owner (before the movie).
